Les Han River Harriers VS Geckos Blues

Sunday October 17th 2004

It was another beautiful Sunday in Seoul, perfect weather for football. Both Geckos and The Harriers were coming off losses the previous week and were looking to get back on the winning track.

The game started well, the ball was moving back and fourth. The Harrier¡¯s strikers were on the prowl, possibly the oldest striker combo in the SSFL Evan Hale and Guillaume Cario don¡¯t let age or defenders slow them down.

It didn¡¯t take long for Evan to use his determination and drive to take control of the ball in Geckos end and feed the ball to Gregoire Frecon (who has not had the best luck this season in finding the back of the net this season) who put home a great goal.

Shortly after this, Gecko¡¯s Goalie was called for holding the ball too long. This rare call resulted in a free kick for the harriers, which they could not convert.

The next goal was a display in great passing. Didi (whose passing was unparallel during the game) took a throw in from Kevin, then gave a long ball to Evan over the defender, Evan then gave a great cross to Guillaume Cario, who put did not have any trouble putting the ball in the back of the goal.

The Harriers did not let up, nor did the man of the match Gregoire Frecon. His hustle and determination is something that separates him from many of the players in this league. Gregoire took the ball off a defender outside the 18 yard box, made a couple of sweet moves and fired home the goal of the match.

With the Harriers up 3-0 no one planned on letting up, especially our captain Evan Hale. Unfortunately after being knocked to the ground while attempting to gain possession, Evan became another victim of the injury prone Harrier season. He hobbled off the field much to the chagrin of his team mates and his personal fan club (Joanne, Samantha, and Griffin).

With Evan out, Jean Blaise was in, and he has no problems playing up front. He quickly took a long throw in from Lawrence and put it in the net. Then half time was upon us.

The second half was filled with many chances for the Harriers, both Didi and Kevin found themselves making great runs, with excellent give and goes only to shoot the ball at the goalies hands. (Kevin still is scoreless in ssfl league games).

Guillaume continued the scoring by taking a great pass from Didi and putting home his second of the match. The Harriers did not let up; neither did the French connection of Guillaume and Gregoire. Guillaume put home his third goal with a brilliant header from a Gregoire corner kick.

It was finally time for Andy Colin to get on the board. Last week¡¯s man of the match plays hard for every second he is on the pitch. He once again worked hard to get open, take a pass from Guillaume and put it in the back of the net.

At the harriers end Randal and Michael (our great keeper) where keeping things in tact. Mike showed why some (including myself) believe him to be the best goalie in this league. Constantly barking instructions and punching at least three dangerous balls away.

Though down, Geckos were not out, they did not give up, they kept on pressing. From a throw in that made its way to the middle of the field, an unmarked Geckos player picked up this ball just outside of Harriers 18 yard box. He had enough time to wait for Kevin to leave his player to challenge him. The Geckos player then made a pass to Alex, who beat Michael on the near side. Needless to say this caused a bit of frustration on the Harriers end, as they were looking for the clean sheet.

Finally our most senior player Phillipe Batchevitch lofted up a high ball towards the Geckos goal. The Geckos keeper (who is not their regular starter) seemed to lose the ball in the sun and the ball just crept under the cross bar. This finished the scoring at 8-1.

I have it under good authority that Geckos have not had the same starters for all of their games this season. Gecko¡¯s believes that once they become a more consistent unit they will be a force to be reckoned with, and I tend to believe them.

Hopefully Randal will return next week to write the next match report, as I return to my Boston Cream Donut?
