NEWS

01/23/01 - The L.A. Times includes Hannibal in its 2001 preview which does have lots of very cool pictures (in the printed version, but you can see some of the pics scanned in at
Coming Attractions) and info about upcoming movies. Read the whole thing HERE.

Also, a big gracias to scooper extraordinaire Arjan Wells for writing with the following report:
-New paperback versions of the novel have appeared showing Anthony Hopkins on the cover.
-According to UIP's Netherland site, the total length of "Hannibal" will be 135 minutes... (I haven't seen this at IMDb.com).
-Have you noticed there is a littel secret on the flash-version of the officical site? When you go to the multimedia section at some point a picture of hannibal appears... it 'tears' open the site and you see a small flash animation saying a line that also appears in the trailer: "How long does it take for a man to return to what he does best", or something like that.
-I have seen new posters from "Hannibal" (online only?) not saying: 'Break the silence' but 'The silence is broken'...

Arjan, we thank you!

01/13/01 -- Just so you know, I've read the Hannibal "review" on Cinescape but have concluded that it's fake since it mentions Spike Jonze and Diane Franklin, both of whom we know are not in Hannibal. That said, I'VE GOT TWO GREAT LINKS TO DEVOUR:

01/12/00 - Anthony Hopkins gets his hands and feet in cement (and it's about friggin time!), presented to him by the lovely Winona Ryder. See all the pictures at the great Sir Anthony Hopkins Fanatic Asylum where I cribbed the excellent pic above. Kudos, Sir Anthony! And big thanks to Gail Bartlett for the head's up!

The super-scooper Barry comes through with another interesting item, an interview with Steve Zaillian from SCR(I)PT Magazine, which you can read H E R E. Warning: Minor spoilers. Thanks again, Barry!

Kenny has added a "personal interactive desktop" to his cool cache of stuff at his well-groomed site, Hannibal's Shrine. Go peruse the goodies and try not to drool on the carpet!

Plus, in addition to its major scoopage about the new Spiderman costume pic, the mighty CHUD has ferreted out some new Hannibal pics and info, which you can read by clicking H E R E. Get cannibalistic!

01/05/00 - Hannibal is mentioned in the AP news service's story about movies coming up in 2001. Also, for those eagle-eyed magazine buyers out there, the Han-man is on the cover of the new Total Movie and the new Brit rag, Empire. Empire has run an excerpt of their piece, which you can read H E R E. I would love to see the images in these magazines! I'm told there are many, many, MANY unseen shots in Total Movie. So, if anyone out there with a scanner happens to have either of these lying around, please spare us Hannibal freaks a thought and scan away (not that we're advocating scanning copywrited material, um, well, I guess we are kinda). Many thanks to the lovely favagirl, Hilary, for once again showing us the way!

12/29/00 -- Friend of Hannibal's Palace and awesome scooper Arjan Welles wrote in to give us the 411 on the stunning Hazelle Goodman, who plays Evelda Drumgo in Hannibal.

Here's what Arjan had to say. (Thanks again, man!):

Hazelle Goodman, cast to play Evelda Drumgo. I am quite amazed by this cast. I think she's perfect. She's originally from Trinidad and Tobago. Do you recall Harris describing Evelda having a Nefrititi (refering to the Egyptian pharaoh/goddess, Nefrititi) neck? I always saw a slender dark-skinned woman in front of me walking very gracefully and slowly, while carrying her baby and some knives and GUNS. Sorta like Grace Jones or the wife of David Bowie, the supermodel, Iman. She kinda walks like a supermodel and then shouts: 'Let's swap body-fluids, bitch'. They better have kept that line in the movie.

For more on the beautiful and talented Ms. Goodman, Click here!

12/27/00 - This is from the New York Post's Page Six:
SCARY STUNT
CERTAIN journalists had a case of the creeps when they received an unmarked package the other day containing a small tape recorder. On the mini-cassette inside, a man with a British accent said, "I couldn't help noticing on the FBI's rather dull public Web site that I've been hoisted from the bureau's archives of the common criminal and elevated to the more prestigious 10 Most Wanted List. Is this coincidence, or are you back on the case. If so, goody goody. Because I need some action, Clarice, I need to come out of retirement and return to public life." By now, one realizes this is Anthony Hopkins promoting "Hannibal," the sequel to "The Silence of the Lambs," premiering Feb. 9 with Julianne Moore replacing Jodie Foster.

12/27/00 - MGM's Official Hannibal Site has updated again, this time with full production notes that give away some of the stories behind all those pictures that have popped over the net. Here's one that jumped out at me:

Anthony Hopkins: It was a wonderful example of how flexible and open to suggestion Ridley was throughout the production, says Hopkins. The first day, I had to play the piano and while the cameras were setting up, I was just fooling around, playing some of my own music, some music Id composed. Ridley came over, made a comment that he liked it. And when it came time for the cameras to roll, he just got up, said Okay, good luck, and that was it. That was the music Hannibal played. Music would come into play in another scene filmed in Florence. In a courtyard adjacent to the famed Santa Croce, the production company staged an original opera.

For more, check out MGM's Hannibal site and click the link for production information.

12/21/00 - Ridley Scott has been nominated for a Golden Globe for his work on Gladiator. Yay! For other Golden Globe fun, check out what the boys at CHUD have to say about it.

Also, today's Dark Horizons picked up something that was in the New York Post (which I couldn't find on the website) that has Ridley talking about how the ending was changed (w/thanks to the great Garth) - Warner: SPOILER:

Hannibal: The saga about the ending of "Hannibal" has caused all sorts of strange things to happen (be aware there's a BIG spoiler in regards to the book ahead). First the movie script stuck to the book's original controversial ending which had Lecter drugging and seducing Clarice, but was changed at Foster's request. When she pulled out of the project, many assumed the original ending would just slide back in place and some of the early photos tended to indicate that - however that's not the case today it seems. Director Ridley Scott told the New York Post: "I think it's a great book, but I told Tom [Harris], I just don't buy these two going off together, even with Clarice under the influence. He said, 'Fine, see what you come up with.' Tom was very happy with Steve Zaillian's screenplay". We'll have to wait till February to see what happens, thanks to 'TBone'.

12/18/00 - What would you do if you got a hand-held taperecorder in the mail with a cryptic spoken message on it from Hannibal Lecter... Would that play the Goldberg Variations along your spine? Our great scooper Fan A just sent this one in. As you read it, feel my teeth grinding with swag-lust:

"My friend who works at a magazine isn't usually shockable when it comes to swag, but she liked the one they sent over from Hannibal. It was this small, black hand-held taperecorder with Anthony Hopkins' voice on it, saying lines from the movie. They were similar to the voice over in the trailer, but she says it sounded as if he recorded this message specifically for them. She could only remember the lines about how he needs some action and wants to come out of retirement. I know you'll want to know exactly what it says and my friend said she'd write it down and send it over, so you'll know when I know."

Can't wait.

12/14/00 - If anyone is wondering why a movie of Hannibal's obvious calibre is not having some sort of "Academy run" to qualify it for next year's Oscars, our scooper favagirl, Hilary, has uncovered another bit, this one from "news" rag, Entertainment Weekly: It says, "A source close to "Hannibal," the sequel to the 1991 Oscar winner "The Silence of the Lambs,", says Ridley Scott lobbied for a 2001 release to clear the coliseum for his work on Gladiator." Whether true or not, it does seem that the two movies might cancel each other out in Oscar voters' minds, which would be an epic crime. Thanks to Hilary!

12/8/00 -- Here is a fragment from the Cinescape article on Anthony Hopkins, which I found on Fandom.com. Pity they misspelled Anthony Hopkins's name. Tsk tsk. (scroll down for the cover image!)

HANNIBAL: Antony Hopkins Interview
The Oscar-Winning Actor Reprises his Most Famous Role
Author: Beth Laski
Date: 12/7/00
Since his mesmerizing Academy Award-winning performance as man-eating murderer Dr. Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, Anthony Hopkins has gone on to star in 21 films, but the actor was perpetually dogged by the same question: Would Lecter ever indulge in a second helping of fava beans and a nice Chianti? "After I did Silence of the Lambs, people would ask, "Are you going to do a sequel?"" Hopkins recalls. "That went on for years. I moved on with my life, and didnt take any notice of it." However, Hopkins couldnt help but take notice when an advance copy of Hannibal, author Thomas Harris sequel to Silence of the Lambs landed on his doorstep in the spring of 1999. "I read it and I thought, "Its strange." I was intrigued by it and wondered if it would make a good film," Hopkins says. "I tend to sort of suspend all judgments because it was certainly a compelling book and I can barely write a post card."

Hopkins decision to reprise his role as one of the cinemas most feared villains was rather simple. "I sort of fell into it," he explains. "I didnt get myself into trying to figure it all out. I know there are some actors who like to get in there and do all that. I cant. I dont have that ability. Im just too lazy."

When asked if he felt any pressure revisiting his most famous role in Hannibal, the actor is quite blunt. "No," he says. "Not at all. I dont give a shit about all that stuff. It would drive me mad to live like that. I wouldnt be able to get out of bed in the morning if I worried about all that stuff."

Looks like Cinescape Magazine has the coolest of all cover stories. Look for this one in your mailbox and on the newsstand. I know I will ... Huge thanks to Hilary, favagirl, for emailing me this.

12/1/00 - Jeanette Walls is two for two now with Hannibal scoops. This one involves, strangely enough, why we won't be hearing Hannibal's patented (truly) slurping noises in Hannibal. A huge thanks to Ken at WISC for giving me the heads up.

Silencing Hannibals true ways

Nov. 29 Hannibal Lecter has been sliced and diced by legal wrangling. Hannibal is hitting theaters on Valentines Day, but a source close to Anthony Hopkins says the actor was forced to drop some of the best-known traits of the seductive cannibal who appeared in the films 1991 Oscar-winning predecessor, Orion Pictures Silence of the Lambs.

HE WASNT REALLY following the minutia of the legal fights, but the upshot was that MGM [which made the picture] didnt own the rights to some of the characteristics used by Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, says the insider. For example, that notorious slurping sound Hopkins made when he talked about fava beans and a nice Chianti was totally ad libbed. So even though it was his, he couldnt use it in Hannibal. Its sort of outrageous. A spokeswoman for MGM, which is distributing the film domestically, referred inquiries to Universal, which is distributing the movie overseas. Universal didnt have a comment by press time.

11/29/00 - Julianne Moore was one of the women profiled in showbiz rag Variety's "Women In Showbiz" issue, apparently, and she talks about Clarice. Here's that section (thanks to the ever-dependable Fan A):

"Moore will next star in one of the most anticipated films in memory, 'Hannibal,' the Ridley Scott-helmed sequel to 'The Silence of the Lambs.; Moore will play Clarice Starling, a role that netted Jodie Foster an Oscar for 'Silence.' Yet Moore insists that she will offer her own spin on this complex character.

"Jodie set an extremely high standard, and if I can do half as well, I'll be happy,' says Moore. 'But you have to start at ground zero. I can't say how it's going to turn out. It's just like doing any other movie: You can't make it what it isn't. But it is a great honor.'"

Then, at the end of the article, she says "And with Ridley Scott, you're transported; he creates alternate universes."

11/18/00 - The Official site put up a Quicktime version of the trailer ("I'm giving serious thought ... to eating your wife"), which you can view here:

"Hannibal" Full Trailer: Lo-Res (6.7Mb, MOV)
"Hannibal" Full Trailer: Med-Res (15.3Mb, MOV)
"Hannibal" Full Trailer: Hi-Res (30.6Mb, MOV)

A huge thanks to Dark Horizons

11/17/00 - As my anonymous friend told me, the trailer for Hannibal will be on Entertaintainment Tonight later on today, but in the meantime, those hooligans put it up on their site (not a bad idea considering I know more than one person who would have it digitized and online in a matter of seconds after it aired) and you can see it here in 56K and here in 300K. Thanks to the great Dark Horizons and Upcoming Horror Movies.

STORIES

11/15/00 - Firstly, I saw a new SPOILER-filled shot over at Les News. Click here to view it. Then mosey on down to the next item.

Cinescape Online transcribed Hopkins's MGM.com interview and posted some of the soundbites! Here they are:

Dr. Lecter's motivation for coming out of hiding: "In Florence I wanted to play him as a man who is bored by his retirement from public life. So, he's indolent. He's bored."

Lecter contacts Clarice: "He's been watching her for years on the website, and he finally decides to write to her. 'Dear Clarice, I hear you're in trouble with the FBI.' And this is a line we put in. It's a letter that the soundtrack goes over some music and over some scenes and he says, " I hear you may be back on the case. If so, goody goody. I need some action." Yeah, he's been watching her."

Discussing the character with Ridley Scott: "One of the aspects of Lecter I suppose he tends to be slightly superhuman. He does things which no ordinary human being can do. Nobody questions how he got away in last movie. How did he do that? How did he get away? How does he live in Florence all these years with out being disguised? So, I discussed that with Ridley Scott, and he said, "Well, what do you think?" I think he likes to live right on the edge of the razor, the razor's edge. And he has no fear. It's like he's taunting them, the FBI, the Italian police and they don't even catch him because he's so obvious and they miss him."

11/11/00 - VCR alert! I got an email saying that the new Hannibal trailer will definitely be on "news" source Entertainment Tonight this coming Friday. What should we expect? Coming Attractions said this about it: "One of those pesky Anonymous types wanted to give us a quick word on the final trailer for this project. They found it: "Effective, but perhaps the most haunting aspect is just how dead-on Julianne Moore mimics Jodie Foster's voice. No real word on when Hannibal's trailer will debut, but it looks ready to go as early as Thanksgiving." [Thanks to Anonymous.]" Can't wait!

11/8/00 - Beth Laski of the Hollywood Reporter broke a story today that Hannibal rights-holder Dino De Laurentiis is going to remake Red Dragon at Universal. I personally dug Michael Mann's great flick Manhunter to an insane degree, but according to De Laurentiis, the new adaptation will focus much more on the Hannibal character and since that character was far scarier than Dolarhyde, I'm all deep in that: Red Dragon is about the crime Hannibal Lecter committed and the way he was arrested, Dino De Laurentiis told The Hollywood Reporter. Hannibal Lecter escaped in Silence of the Lambs, and in Hannibal, you see him in a new situation in Florence (Italy). The audience would like to know once and forever why, where and by whom Hannibal Lecter was arrested. This new version has parts of the book never seen before. Read the whole piece here

11/6/00 - Coming Attractions, which is neck-and-neck with Dark Horizons as my favorite movie site du jour, reported a rumor that I had actually heard in a chat room. Hope it's true! (and thanks for the link, Corona-ites!):
"In regards to the actual ending of the film, Internet 24-7 was couched out in front of Entertainment Tonight and tells us: "There have been A NUMBER of endings filmed and not even Anthony Hopkins knows what ending will be chosen." Hannibal is a choose your own adventure movie? Who knew? [Originally appeared at Entertainment Tonight; scooped by Internet 24-7.]"

10/30/00 - Jeanette Walls had a nice bit of Hannibalism in her column today: Ridley Scott, fresh from filming the sequel to Silence of the Lambs in Italy, said Julianne Moore plays a much more emotional Clarice Starling than the one portrayed by Jodie Foster. Viewers will see an entirely different side of Clarice, Scott told the Scoop. Meanwhile, Anthony Hopkins was his same old scary self, terrifying everyone on the set of Hannibal, said Scotts girlfriend, Gianina Facio.

Thank you, Jeannette!

10/23/00 - Alena, whose great site, A Pound of Flesh, has consistently scored new pictures from Hannibal, just rustled up a few more, including this stunning image of Anthony Hopkins, Giancarlo Giannini as the unfortunate Pazzi, and I think the cinematographer... Click on the pic to check out the rest at her site...

10/9/00 - Al Ortega, from the cool webzine Eon, snagged Anthony Hopkins at a premiere, took his pictures and got him to talk about Hannibal (right on, Al!). Here is their story (but always check out Eon for scoops. They get some good ones!):

HOPKINS ON HANNIBAL
By CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
October 9, 2000

While out on the town (Hollywood, that is) at some premiere or another, Anthony Hopkins was snagged by EON magazine's Al Ortega for a few quotes on the hyper-anticipated HANNIBAL. When asked about the shoot and his feelings for the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS sequel, Hopkins started out blandly with, "It's going to be an interesting villain. Ridley Scott is a great director." He then went on to hint that the changes to the end of the story (Thomas Harris' book HANNIBAL ended in such a way that had many fans howling, but the movie is rumored to have a different ending). Specifically, the "romance" between FBI agent Clarice Starling and Dr. Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter.

"It's a sort of dark, strange obsessive romance but I won't give any more away," Hopkins teased, then went back to blandishments with, "It was a great movie to make with Julianne who's beautiful to work with and an incredible cast and a wonderful director."

Guess we'll see when HANNIBAL hits theaters next February.

10/6/00 - Not that I read People Magazine ... ok, I sometimes look at the pictures ... but I did see a short bit about Hannibal while waiting in the check out line at the supermarket and here it is:

"Behind the Seams ... by Steven Cojocaru. Facing down Hannibal Lecter is a chiling prospect, but Julianne Moore is doing it in style. The actress, starring with Anthony Hopkins in the Silence of the Lambs sequel, needed to be dolled up for a pivotal scene shot recently. Moore suggested designer Mark Bouwer, who whipped up a clingy black cocktail dress with plunging V neckline. Bouwer wound up making three identical versions of the frock for the very physical scene ..." OK, I think we all know what scene this is. Oh, and senator ... love yer suit.

9/26/00 - Now that more people visit this site I'm starting to get more email from people, which I like! Someone who didn't want their name listed sent me the following note about Hannibal footage:

"This is kind of a six degrees of Kevin Bacon thing, but I have a friend who has a friend who works at a place where they make trailers. This guy said he saw some footage from the movie "Hannibal" and said it was incredible -beautifully photographed and very intense. He said they see a lot of stuff at this place and this one stands out. Anyway, I thought you might like to know."

9/17/00 - Catherine at Les News posted a gang of new pictures shot during an interview between Hopkins and the intrepid PBS interviewer Charlie Rose.

9/11/00 - Our favorite movie site on the net, Coming Attractions posted some tidbits today about casting, knives, etc. We reprint parts of it here, but go to CA for the full skinny!

September 11, 2000... Okay, everyone -- Ned has the conch shell. Listen up. "Here is some casting information confirmed by the IMDb. Boyd Kestner will be playing John Brigham, the FBI Instructor; Zeljko Ivanek will play Cordell, Mason Verger's assistant; Ivano Marescotti is Carlos Deogracias (One of the primary characters hunting for Hannibal on behalf of Verger); Also, Frankie Faison will reprise his role as Barney - Lecter's orderly from Silence of the Lambs; and finally: Spike Jonze plays Donnie Barber. And, as a possible spoiler here: Spike is on the menu." [Originally appeared at the IMDB; scooped by Ned.]

Resident cutlery expert Owlsoup caught something in that pic from Variety: "Regarding your latest posted pic for Hannibal, featuring Dr. Lecter with a knife...there is a key scene in the book where Lecter uses a Harpy knife. (Thomas Harris emphasized Dr. Lecter's succinctity of taste within the narrative by specifying very select items. The Harpy knife was one. A Ducati motorcycle was another. Of course, we remember the Chianti and farver beans from the Silence movie (straight out of Harris' dialogue). I hope these details make the transition from novel to script to screen. Your photo is fuzzy, but the blade looks like it could be a Harpy (which is a Spyderco knife with a disinct in-curve blade)." Owlsoup also sent us a link to the knife itself, so click here to ooh and aah. [Thanks to Owlsoup for the headsup.]

9/9/00 - News of the end of production has hit all the various sites. Coming Attractions also has a picture of the wild boars from Hannibal. Alena has posted another photo from a magazine article. Wrap-up stories have also appeared at FilmForce and TNMC Good Movie News, which also had the following report (which originally appeared in Entertainment Weekly:

We haven't mentioned some of the stars of this movie yet. I didn't want to boar you with the details. Sorry, bad pun. Mason Verger's plan for revenge on Hannibal Lecter revolves around feeding him to man eating pigs. Yes you read that right. For the movie approximately 6,000 pics were auditioned. In the end 15 Russian boars were chosen that belonged to a rancher in Winnipeg. Animal wrangler Sled Reynolds was in charge of training the boars. "They really don't attack -- they're just trained to go grab stuff," says Reynolds. "I mean, if they're crazy, how do you work around them?"

9/7/00 - Well, after 17 weeks of shooting, Hannibal has officially wrapped production. Producers Martha and Dino De Laurentiis have given a few choice sound bites to popcorn.com. Read them H E R E

. 9/6/00 - Alena, keeper of the Hannibal ring and the great site A Pound of Flesh, landed an image which we have since found out is the first official shot from Hannibal. This picture appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Variety and maybe elsewhere (if you've seen it, or have a clean copy of it, please drop me a line!) In the meantime, she landed the cool color image at the top of this page.

8/29/00 - Boyd Kestner is a young actor who was in Ridley Scott's G.I. Jane and now plays the FBI Agent Brigham opposite Julianne Moore's Clarice. He recently spoke to TNMC Good Movie News about his upcoming films Cleopatras Second Husband and Snakeskin, and also spoke a little about Hannibal. Here's a sample:

JS: In Hannibal, what part are you playing? BK: An FBI agent. I open up the film, with Julianne Moore.

JS: I read the book, is that the gun battle that starts it?

BK: Yeah, they kinda switched the roles around a bit. Brigham gets killed and the other guy Mendez is now the part I'm playing, Burke. And actually he lives. I had three and a half weeks on that. I had worked with Ridley doing G.I. Jane. He had just offered me a part in that so I couldn't refuse.

JS: How did you like working on it?

BK: It was amazing. A set like that is always a lot of fun. You get to play. Especially when you have all the time in the world to play cops and robbers. You get a week to shoot a scene, a shoot out scene between FBI agents and gangers. Julianne Moore was great to work with, she's wonderful. Always love working with Ridley. He's fun to work with. Got a good relationship with him, it's fun. It's fun to have relationships with people like this in Hollywood. You kind of know what to expect. I'm excited to see the final product on that.

JS: It must be nice to do a shoot pretty close to home [Hannibal was shooting in Richmond, Virginia].

BK: Oh, it was a lot of fun. Actually my mother and grandmother got a chance to meet Anthony Hopkins. So that made her year. That was enough for them. They didn't want to watch me work. They just wanted to meet him. So, I'm just happy that that took place. That's exciting, when that happens. It makes the struggle worth it.

8/19/00 - Filming is winding down, according to a scooper at today's Coming Attractions:

August 19, 2000... "An anonymous type sent us word that filming has completed elsewhere and is now shooting interiors at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina. There will also be some shots done on the streets of Asheville, which will include some members of the Asheville Police Department. Closed set over at the Biltmore, but watch for them on the streets. You know what to do. For information on the Biltmore, click here. [Originally appeared on The Asheville Film Board's website; pointed out to us by Anonymous.]"

But in the meantime, a scooper named "Tom" filed the following report at Dark Horizons:

"I was in Asheville, NC two weeks ago and went to the Biltmore house there. I was informed that they are setting up to film the Silence of the Lambs sequel and that some of the rooms would be off limits. I was there around the 3rd of Aug. I think. Anyway, preparations were just beginning and I was told the actors would not be onset for a week or two. The tapestry room and library are two of the rooms in which filming will take place. The crew has removed most of the furniture from the tapestry room and is replacing it with prop furniture. That is where filming will take place first. The tapestry room is basically just a long, wide hall. Oneside is covered with the wall hangings and the other is mostly windows with a gorgeous view of the Pisgah national forest. The library is excellent. It has high ceilings and a balcony which runs completely around the room if I remember right. It was piled high with the furniture from the tapestry room during the time I was there. My guess is that the actors are at the house for filming by now. That was the impression I got from the employees there."

8/16/00 - Back in May, Laura Palmer posted sound files from the Florence press conference with Sir Anthony Hopkins, Julianne Moore, Ridley Scott, Dino DeLaurentis and some of the other cast and crew involved with Hannibal. Now, she has outdone herself by amassing a pretty impressive collection of segments from TV shows like ET and Access Hollywood, etc. You can watch those clips by clicking here!

8/1/00 - Hannibal castmember Sam Wells wrote to us about his role as a newscaster who explains the back-story about Clarice, Hannibal and the captured Catherine Martin. Here is his description of his day with Ridley:

"I was cast as a TV anchorman here in Richmond. It was great working with Ridley Scott. After a few pratice runs, we shot the scene in one take. Ridley came out, shook my hand and said the scene was perfect. The scene was shot at WRIC, channel 8, here in Richmond. Except for the mid day news anchor at 8, who was upset that he didn't get cast in my role, everything was first class. All of the cast and crew were supportive and very professional. Now ,to keep it off of the cutting room floor is the big question or should I say concern."

Right on, Sam! We'll watch for you!

7/31/00 - A scooper wrote into Garth Franklin's Dark Horizons site with a report from the set of Hannibal.

"'Hannibal,' the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs", completes its filming in Richmond today and heads for greener pastures in Montpelier, VA and Asheville, NC. Two weeks ago, I was allowed back on the set in the Old State Library to view the mental hospital tier prop Anthony Hopkins' character was imprisoned in. (Many of y'all will recall that this hospital was located in Baltimore.) I was amazed at how realistic the brickwork and steel pipes looked even though they were made of plastic and fiberglass. Hannibal Lecter's jail cell was open and the place was made to look trashed. Beer bottles, liquor bottles, old newspapers, matches, and a chicken bone were scattered about and the "plexiglas" front was all smudged.

The mental health prison tier was located in one of the former reading rooms of the Old State Library. Outside of the prop were other background effects, such as part of a stairwell, and a Call Sheet for the day, which showed that Zeljko Ivanek will make an appearance in the movie as Dr. Cordell Doemling. The only thing I can say about Ivanek's character at this point is that he interacts with FBI Special Agent Krendler (played by Ray Liotta). Most everything else is hush-hush until the movie is ready for release."

7/27/00 - Coming Attraction's Hannibal page reports from scooper Kevin that "shooting seems to have moved to Berkeley Plantation, located about 25 miles east of Richmond, Virginia in Charles City County. I spotted the same trucks there that I spotted in Capitol Square near the General Assembly Building along with what could've been a catering tent. This was on Sunday, July 23 and it looked like everyone had the day off." Could this be Verger's compound?

Also, more pics have shown up at Richmond.com's Hannibal site, along with a mention of the new Anthony Hopkins/Stephen King/William Goldman/Scott Hicks flick, Hearts in Atlantis, which may end up shooting in Virginia as well.

Speaking of Stephen King, check out my King site for info about how to download his new/old serial, The Plant!

7/24/00 - Today's Dark Horizons has an interesting set report about a scene on an airplane involving Hannibal, a small Japanese boy and a funny/creepy line of dialog. Also, the awesome Coming Attractions learned that the filmmakers raided a real university biology lab for props ... including a human hand! Check it out at the above link.

7/20/00 - Alena's supercool Pound of Flesh site has lots of info about production and great links. Also, Inflix has landed some new pics from the Richmond set.

7/17/00 - The always reliable Coming Attractions debunks rumors of trouble in Florence and Virginia. Plus, another set report. Click the above link for the scoop!

From Dark Horizons: Hannibal: A casting flyer is now out in various New York City restaurants for a 6-8 year old Japanese boy to play a role in the movie. Meanwhile, 'Surfwolf' was going through a fanlist for one of her fave shows "Homicide: Life on the Street" when someone chimed in with a report of their visit to the "Hannibal" set to meet some of the 'Homicide' crew who are actually involved in the movie. Here's the report from 'Medic' (minus the TV show-related stuff). A quick thanks also to 'Jonathan':

"For the past 3 weeks, "Hannibal", the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs", has been filming in Richmond. Two weeks ago I visited the set to deliver some materials to a member of the production team and was allowed to remain and witness an FBI shootout scene with Julianne Moore at a fish market constructed in the Shockhoe Bottom area of downtown. Everyone on the set of "Hannibal" had to clear out of the way for a car-crash/FBI cover blown/automatic gunfire-shootout clip that had me ducking for cover (geez those blanks are loud!).

Oh, and one more thing....does anyone other than me find it odd that the building loaned to the "Hannibal" production team for a site headquarters is also the same structure that houses the State Medical Examiner's Office? The dead bodies are just one floor down. ...Makes you wonder if Anthony Hopkins' character is going to have a buffet scene or something."

7/14/00 - Richmond.com has landed a ton of great pictures from the set of Hannibal (including the one shown at the top of this page) and also confirms that Frankie Faizon is going to reprise his role as the compassionate Baltimore hospital guard Barney. Check out their cool Hannibal site for details about a local newscaster who gets to play a reporter in Hannibal and a lucky greenskeeper who had a memorable encounter with Sir Anthony Hopkins! This site is cool times ten!

7/11/00 - The following mini-report was on Garth's great Dark Horizons: "A couple blocks over from my dads office in downtown Richmond, Monument Avenue area, they are filming Hannibal. It looks like they are filming it in someones house. The house looks like a separated townhouse and there are about 20 trucks surrounding it. I also caught a glimpse of Anthony Hopkins face through a window."

7/8/00 - APBNews reports that the San Diego Museum of Man this month debuts an infamous Italian exhibit - "Inquisition: Torture and Intolerance," which will be on display until November. If you've read the book Hannibal, this exhibit, which features every device of torture from iron maidens to electric chairs (in a notably anti death-penalty stance), is where Inspector Pazzi first notices Hannibal at its permanent home at the Medieval Criminal Museum near Florence, Italy, where Hannibal has been living in relative anonymity. Read the full APBNews piece here.

Also in the news, Empire Magazine printed a new picture of Anthony Hopkins on the Hannibal set. The great CHUD scanned it and have it on their Fetal Films Hannibal page.

7/6/00 - The folks at TNMC had a scooper write in with another set report from Shockoe Bottom - which I'm told is like the Melrose or Greenwich Village section of Virginia. The scooper actually stood nearby and watched them film a scene of the film. Read their report by clicking here.

6/30/00 - Greg Cannom, who did makeup effects on Bicentennial Man, The Insider, Idle Hands, Titanic, etc., is doing all the effects for Hannibal. The sketch of Mason Verger on CHUD's most excellent Fetal Films report is not from the production. I wanted to check it out, so I called the production office and got connected the film's publicist who said that the sketch wasn't theirs.

Today's Dark Horizons has a set report from someone who watched them film the first part of the shootout scene between the FBI and Evelda Drumgo at a place called Shockoe Bottom. Read it HERE.
6/13/00 - Propers to Coming Attractions and Dark Horizons for landing a bunch of interesting observations from Washington D.C.'s denizens about the Hannibal goings-on in our nation's Capital, including the radio station contest to be an extra in Hannibal. I have listed those reports here. There is also an addiional observation and more info about the Canal Club on Filmforce's Hannibal page
6/12/00 - There is an odd symmetry to Hannibal dining with President Clinton. If anybody can explain it, please e-mail me.:

From the Associated Press (by way of the Washington Post):

Clinton Dines With Anthony Hopkins
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON President Clinton played a relatively quick 18 holes of golf Sunday so he could get back to the White House in time for dinner there with actor Anthony Hopkins.
They were being joined by the first lady, fresh off the Senate campaign trail in New York City where she participated earlier Sunday in the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
Wearing all-black in 90-degree-plus heat and chewing a cigar, Clinton played with Democratic fund-raiser Terry McAuliffe and his Georgetown University classmate Brian Greenspun, now publisher of the Las Vegas Sun.
Hopkins is in Washington filming "Hannibal," a sequel to the hit "Silence of the Lambs."

Meanwhile, a scooper tells cinescape.com: "Hannibal was filming in and around Washington, DC this weekend. In particular, filming was taking place at Union Station near where the T-Rex Sue replica is located. Additional filming may have also been taking place on the Mall itself."

Attention potential spies: This week, the word is that Hannibal is in Washington. Next week, Richmond. Look for those hand-written signs they post around town, follow them, and then send me a report, confidentiality guaranteed! Obviously, don't get yourself arrested! In the meantime, the Richmond Times Dispatch is reporting that President James Madison's historical home Montpelier will be one of the Hannibal locations. Read the piece here.

6/9/00 - Hannibal is in the top spot of the "mass market paperbacks" best seller list, according to AP. I know that's not really news but I thought it was cool enough to put on here anyway.

6/8/00 - Click here to read the Virginia Times Dispatch article about Shockoe Bottom, where they're filming the shootout scene.

6/6/00 - Rumblings have been cropping up about a few things. Filming is about to commence in Richmond, VA, where the casting agency was seeking extras. Les News reports that the scene they'll be filming will be Clarice's SWAT team face-off with drug dealer Evelda Drumgo, which is rumored to be occurring at Shockoe Bottom, close to the farmers market and Main St. Grill. "Babdool" wrote in to say that production was up all night in front of the Palazzo Vecchio with an elaborate rig coming out of a window there. Could this be the infamous fate of Pazzi?

5/31/00 - He played a hillbilly redneck gulf war soldier in Three Kings, now Ridley Scott has him playing a gun show redneck in Hannibal. The awesome movie director (Being John Malkovich, Sabotage video) Spike Jonze has been rumored to be in Hannibal, but today's Dark Horizons reports who he plays: 'Xenophobic Socialite' has a little bit more on that rumoured Spike Jonze casting - BEWARE, potential spoilers ahead: "Before Spike starts production on "Benjamin Button" for Paramount, he will film his role in "Hannibal" as a redneck hunter who Lecter meets at a gunshow and then murders on a hunting trip."

5/29/00 - If you live in the Richmond, Virginia, area, you could be an extra in Hannibal! To anyone who hasn't been an extra (we at Extreme Hannibalism have had the pleasure, but only on a TV movie), that means you stand around for a while waiting for your scene, then you move around a little bit in the background while the camera rolls, plus they feed you lunch. But, there are great bonuses! One, you could watch the movie and maybe see yourself in the background passing by for a millisecond, and two, you might get to see the great Anthony Hopkins or Julianne Moore in action (and then write to us here and tell us what you saw!) This is the chance of a lifetime, people! Ridley Scott and co. will be filming in town for six weeks beginning in mid-June. Read the Richmond Times-Dispatch story for details.

5/28/00 - From Variety: ... Boyd Kestner (''G.I. Jane'') will reteam with helmer Ridley Scott for Universal's ``Silence of the Lambs'' sequel ``Hannibal,'' as an FBI agent with a romantic link to Julianne Moore's Clarice Starling. Kestner just wrapped the indie ``Snakeskin'' with Melanie Lynskey (''Heavenly Creatures'').
Actress Diane Baker has joined the cast of the film. Baker played Senator Ruth Martin ("Take this animal back to Baltimore!") in Silence of the Lambs and will reprise said role for the new film.

5/24/00 - From Cinescape online: Dr. Lecter's creator, Thomas Harris, has visited the set of the Hannibal movie currently shooting in Florence, Italy, but not for what you might think. According to Variety (click here for Variety story), contrary to recent rumors, Harris was not invited there to make changes to the film's script with word that Steve Zaillian's draft remains intact and in use.

As part of the visit, Harris also met Anthony Hopkins for the first time.

Beyond just participating in the production, word has it that Harris actually came to Florence to pick up a bronze statue of a wild boar for his garden back home. The author liked the original that sits in Florence's Mercato Nuovo downtown area so much that he ordered one up from a local artisan for himself. Perhaps that's what inspired Mason Verger's man-eating boars in the original book.

5/22/00 - An anonymous source wrote in with a report about Ridley Scott showing his great flick Gladiator to the crew: "I have a small job on the set of Hannibal and have one story for you. Many of this crew worked on Gladiator also and enjoyed a cast and crew screening (attended by Anthony Hopkins - who loved the movie) the Sunday before production started. Ridley and producer Branko Lustig arranged this screening for us. Gladiator just opened in Florence and many of went to see it for a second time over the weekend. It's that good!"

From the IMDB:

JULIANNE MOORE caused a stir when she spent several weeks learning how to track down and handcuff criminals at America's top FBI training camp for her role in upcoming movie. The Hannibal (2001) star underwent basic training, along with American's selected to be special agents with the FBI, learning how to track down criminals, run like an FBI agent, handcuff and handle a gun. The training was preparation for her part in Hannibal as AGENT CLARICE STARLING, co- staring ANTHONY HOPKINS. And, according to insiders at the 650 acre Quantico based camp, the stunning actress "brightened up the training", for hundreds of super-fit FBI agents. Spokesman for the FBI base KIRK CRAWFORD says, "To train Julianne we had to get special permission from our headquarters. It was quite an unusual request... The thing is we train all the FBI agents out here and so we really hate it when we see people playing FBI agents in the movies and getting it all wrong. It is misinformation so we are happy to have given her basic training... Julianne had pretty basic training. She learned how to handcuff and how an agent would act or think in a given situation."

5/16/00: From Eon Magazine's interview with Ridley Scott:
Scott's next film may be even more highly-anticipated than GLADIATOR. The director returns to the present day for HANNIBAL, the high-profile follow-up to the monster hit THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. But Scott faced some initial hurdles from actress Jodie Foster, who eventually passed on the opportunity to recreate her Oscar-winning role of Clarice Starling for the sequel. The role has now been taken up by Julianne Moore, but Scott isn't worried about Moore filling Foster's cheap shoes. "Well, you're ten years later," Scott says. "It's not so much what Jodie didn't bring to it; Jodie fulfilled brilliantly, and it was echoed by the fact that she got an Academy Award for it, a rookie, an innocent. She can no longer be innocent ten years later, right? So Julianne is starting off with really a fresh canvas."

Scott had no problems engineering the return of Anthony Hopkins to his famed Hannibal Lecter role. "Anthony was always keen to do it, and he actually was very amused by the book," Scott says. "He thought the book was great, but he was all [fired up] to do the script."

HANNIBAL's script was worked out between Scott, HANNIBAL novelist Thomas Harris and SCHINDLER'S LIST screenwriter Steven Zaillian. "The most enjoyable part, actually, was when we invited Tom into L.A., sat with Steve Zaillian and I for five days over it," Scott says. "There were little bits in the third act that got tricky, and I wanted him to be very much part of the process, because after all he spent nine years writing the goddamn book. He at the end of it thought, 'This is great.' He said, 'I like doing this shit, I'll do the next book this way.'"

HANNIBAL features more elaborate monstrosities than the Lecter/Starling/Buffalo Bill triangle in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, including wild boars and an additional villain named Verger, whose face has been ripped off. Scott brushes off concerns that the Verger character will be impossible to depict on film. "You can do anything today; you can really do anything today," he insists. "I'm shooting that in the Vanderbilt house in South Carolina." He's more circumspect about the film's killer pigs after working with GLADIATOR's tigers. "Killer pigs are more dangerous than the tigers. They're not killer pigs, they're wild boars. They're four hundred and seventy pounds.

5/4/00: The filmmakers held a surprise press conference in Florence, attended by Anthony Hopkins (Hannibal Lecter), Julianne Moore (Clarice Starling), Ridley Scott (Director), the De Laurentiises (Producers), Steve Zaillian (Screenwriter), Francesca Neri (Mrs. Pazzi) and Giancarlo Giannini (Pazzi). Filmforce put out some awesome coverage of this first temblors befor all-out hannibalism wreaks havoc!!! back to top

5/3/00: The Hannibal teaser trailer will be up with this weekend's showings of Gladiator. The teaser trailer shows a black screen with ideas from the first film about what not to do when you're around Hannibal along with ever-tightening images of Hannibal in the Baltimore prison where we first encountered him in Silence of the Lambs. I am on a mission to get that teaser up on this site. In the meantime, they teased the teaser on Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday. back to top
