| Mt. Rose 8/2/03 & 8/9/03 |
| Mt. Rose is in between Reno and Lake Tahoe about a half hour drive from my home. The peak is at 10,776 ft above sea level. The trail starts close to the top of the Mt. Rose pass at 8900 ft for a gain of 1900 vertical ft and the trail is 5.9 miles one way. My annual trip up this year on saturday 8/2/03 was not as pleasant as usual. The weather was kind of ruff with clouds, rain and wind...burrr. The next Saturday 8/9/03 was such a nice clear day that I thought I might as well do it again. The trail offers great views of Reno, Tahoe, Carson Valley, Truckee and Donner areas. To get to the Mt. Rose Trail you take the Tahoe Rim Trail from the Mt. Rose Highway for 2.5 miles on a dirt road to a snow melt pond. There are views of Lake Tahoe and Incline Lake on this part. The Mt. Rose Trail from here takes you through a meadow across a few small streams into the Mt. Rose Wilderness area and up the west side of Mt. Rose. On the way up you have views of the Mt. Rose ski area, Carson Valley, lakes & reservoirs west of Reno. You can even see Donner Lake & Donner pass on I80. Mt. Lassen in norther CA is also visable . Once on top you can see all the Reno/Sparks area. This is a very nice hike. You have to check the weather forcast, because it does get windy and cold. Any time between October and May you can get into alot of snow. |
