Nicholas Segrave
By inheritance, marriage and acquisition the Segrave family had become possessed of great estates in the Midlands. Nicholas, son of Gilbert, fought with the Barons under Simon De Montfort and was taken prisoner at Evesham on the 4th of August 1265 and his property became forfeit to the Crown. Nicholas made peace with King Henry and by payment of a very large fine - five years of his estates value - he re-obtained the larger part of his property including Caludon. The Dictum of Kenilworth was the decree under which this act of redemption took place and was formulated in Coventry.
