Giving Young People a Hand, Breaking Their Predicament, Turning Their Lives Around

Hand Brake Turn is a Registered Training Organisation
providing an automotive training program for disadvantaged
young people in the Geelong region.

Hand Brake Turn encourages and works alongside Young People to maximise their potential and achieve a brighter future.
Hand Brake Turn provides practical training, personal support and links to employment in the Motor Trade for Young People. Our focus is on early school leavers, females seeking non-traditional employment and those who have had difficulty coping with the traditional academically based education system.

After participants graduate we provide ongoing support, assisting them to gain an apprenticeship or traineeship in the automotive industry.
The success rate of the program is one of the highest in it’s field with over 30% of graduates being placed in apprenticeships, traineeships and fulltime work, with another 30% going on to further training and part-time or casual work within 3 months of course completion.
Workshop

Most of the training is of a “hands on” variety in our fully equipped workshop of about 800sq metres. The students have the opportunity to learn the basics of the trades in a fully functional workshop facility much like what they will experience once out in the workforce.

What sort of cars do we work on?
We have a constantly evolving array of vehicles here at Hand Brake Turn so students get to work on all types of vehicles from 60’s classics to the new millennium models.
A major sponsor of Hand Brake Turn Geelong is the Ford Motor Company. Ford has recently donated some AUII vehicles to be used for training purposes along with two new body shells. One of these body shells has recently been transformed into a finished vehicle by using the parts supplied by Ford and will now be used daily in the program.

Knowing which is the right tool for the job is a critical skill in the Motor Trade and here at Hand Brake Turn we are able to teach you those skills thanks to many years in the trade and a well equipped workshop.
In addition to well known hand tools and specialist tools we have a fully equipped spray painting booth, top quality spray guns, welders and a great diagnostic engine analyser which was donated by Toyota Australia’s Training facility.
Our “Victim of Crime” car is a unique aspect to the Hand Brake Turn program. Throughout the year the course participants recondition a number of quality pre-owned vehicles, which are then donated to worthy recipients put forward by some of the Geelong welfare agencies.
We have found that this gives the young people involved, some of who have been a party to motor vehicle crime, a real sense of purpose and satisfaction in what they are doing.
