The Rangers best role is that of scout and ranged combatant.

Without the heavy armor of the fighter or staying power of the barbarian, the ranger should focus on opportunistic ranged attacks.

He can also assist groups with healing as a melee combatant when needed.

A Ranger can use a variety off weapons and is quite capable in combat.  He stands out in the use of ranged combat, raining down a volley of accurate missiles with his bow or crossbow.  His skills also make him adept at finding his prey and avoiding detection.  Finally, an experienced range has such a tie to nature that he can actually draw upon natural power to cast a selection of divine spells.

The wilds are home to fierce and cunning creatures, such as bloodthirsty worgs and malicious spiders.  But more cunning and powerful than these monsters is the ranger, a skilled hunter and stalker.  He knows both the hidden hearts of the woodlands and the darkest cave of the underworld, and no strength or weakness of his prey escapes his notice.

Dexterity is important for a ranger because he tends t o wear light armor and several ranger skills are based on that ability.

A Wisdom score of 14 or higher is require to use the most powerful ranger spells, and a score of 11 or higher is required to cast any ranger spells at all.

The rangers class skills include Concentration, Heal, Hide, Jump, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Spot, and Swim.  The ranger has a healthy number of skill points and a number of strong skill choices to make.

A stealthy scout is one choice (invest in Move Silently and Hide).

Focusing on threat detection is another (invest in Search, Spot and Listen).

A ranger with a good wisdom score and spellcasting focus should invest in Concentration, for when the range wants to cast spells while under attack.  With any extra skill points, Tumble and Repair are good choices to make.

As a ranger, common feat choices related to offense include Point Blank Shot, Rapid Reload, and Weapon Finesse.  Rapid Reload is good if youre going to use crossbows, and Weapon Finesse is excellent for improving your attack bonus if your Dexterity is higher than your Strength.  Dodge and Combat Expertise are excellent if your meet the Dexterity or Intelligence minimums and want to boost your defense.

Other good choices include any of the feats that add bonuses to many of your ranger skills.

As a range, youll also be selecting a Favored Enemy Class Feat.  Youll be more effective at fighting this enemy than any other.  Good short term choices are Reptilians, Goblinoids, or Monstrous Humanoids.  Better long-term choices are Giants, Humans, or Evil Outsiders.  Favored Enemy: Undead is a good choice with both long-term and short-term potential.

Rangers begin play with Bow Strength, Defensive Fighting, Heroic Durability, Martial Weapon Proficiency, Simple Weapon Proficiency, Sneak, Sunder, Trip and Wild Empathy.
The racial bonuses dwarves get when fighting giants, orcs, and Goblinoids stack with favored enemy bonuses against those same foes.  Dwarf rangers tend to pick up animal companions that are comfortable living underground.
