TOURNAMENT RESULTS

 

St. Catharines:

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs went undefeated in round robin and Championship play to win the St. Catharines Tournament.  The Pontiacs defeated the Elmira Intermediates 8 to 1 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst.  Liz Verbeem, Johanna Malisani, and Brenda Brown took charge at the plate with each going 3 for 3 and accounting for a total of 4 runs and 3 rbis.

 

In the initial pool play games, Bekki Longboat pitched a two hitter to open up the tournament against Oak Ridges.  Christine Bassett led at the plate going 4 for 4 and scoring twice with Riekie Dutcher going 3 for 4 with two rbi’s.  In the Saturday morning game, Kelly Copland took the mound and pitched a 5 hitter with Christine Bassett again having a good game at the plate with a home run and two singles going 3 for 3.  Riekie Dutcher followed that with a triple and single to plate the key runs.  The ball was hen passed to Carol Mundy for the third game of the tournament and she led the Pontiacs by pitching a 3 hitter against Milton.  Johanna Malisani helped at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring twice.  The final game of the pool play was pitched by Dawn Vanderhorst who threw a 3 hitter.  The bats were led by Kristy Freshwater and Krissy Sebastian who each were 2 for 3 and scored twice.

 

Moving onto the Championship round, the Pontiacs were in a battle with the St. Catharines Intermediates with the score tied 1 – 1 until the fifth inning when the inning started off with a walk and three bunt singles in a row.  Strong defence including two double-plays in the game helped to propel the Pontiacs to the win and onto the Championship game.

Trenton:

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs went undefeated in the Round Robin portion of the Trenton Invitational but were surprised in the medal lay by the Kars Midgets who outhit them to advance into the quarter-finals.  In the first game of the tournament, Dawn Vanderhorst pitched a strong game as well as lead the team at the plate going 3 for 4, scoring twice and having 3 rbi’s to lead the team to a 6 to 0 win over the Nepean Sharks.  In game two of the tournament, Carol Blakely-Mundy took the mound and led the team to an 8 to 3 win over the Napanee Express.  Liz Verbeem lead the team going 3 for 5 at the plate, scoring twice.  Krissy Sebastian also had a strong day at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring once.  In the final game of the round robin, Kelly Copland pitched the win with Dianne Trask (2 for 3 scoring twice) and Johanna Malisani (3 for 3 scoring once) leading the Pontiacs at the plate.

 

In the medal round, the Pontiacs came up short in the 7th inning as they came back from a 4 to 2 score to plate one run and leave runners in scoring position.  Carol Blakely-Mundy took the loss on the mound with Riekie Dutcher leading at the plate going 3 for 4 but not scoring during the game.

 

Eventual winners of the tournament were the Elmira Miss DeMeaners.

Ancaster:

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs played in three shutout games on the weekend in the Ancaster Tournament, winning one and coming up short offensively on two.  In the first game, Kelly Copland pitched a 5 hitter and gave up one earned run for the 2 to 0 loss against the Brampton Juniors.  The Pontiacs were limited to 4 hits during the game with Dawn Vanderhorst leading the way with 2 hits to start off two separate innings but they could not get the run across.  In the next game, Dawn took the mound and gave up 1 hit and 2 walks to lead the Pontiacs to a shutout win.  Catherine Lawrence led the way at the plate with 2 hits and 2 rbi’s as well as scoring once.  Liz Verbeem was also a strong lead-off hitter as she went 2 for 4 and scored twice.  Kathy Sitak also showed her clutch hitting by going 2 for 3 with 1 rbi.  In the final game of the round robin, the Pontiacs were held to three hits as offensively they were not able to push a run across.  Kelly Copland pitched the loss as the game was tight until the Brampton Seniors broke it open in the 5th inning scoring 3 runs.

 

The tournament format then moved forward the top team in the pool along with the best plus-minus teams from the weekend.  The Pontiacs missed moving forward by a few runs on the plus-minus side.

Newmarket:

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs re-entered the Newmarket Tournament for the second year and did not advance beyond the Round Robin play.  In the first game, the Pontiacs were defeated 8 to 4 by the Newmarket Seniors.  Dawn Vanderhorst took the loss with Johanna Malisani and Liz Verbeem providing support at the plate going 2 for 4 and scoring once each.  In the second game, Port Perry Juniors took the lead in the first two innings with the Pontiacs fighting back in the 6th to tie and then to win in the 8th inning in overtime behind Kelly Copland’s pitching.  Liz Verbeem and Riekie Dutcher provided the hitting support going 3 for 4 at the plate and each scoring once.  Christine Bassett scored the winning run on the International Tie-breaking rule by being placed at 2nd to start the inning, bunted over to third by a basehit from Riekie Dutcher and scoring on Catherine Lawrence’s sacrifice fly.

 

In the third game of the round robin, the Pontiac bats were again silent as the Port Perry Seniors came out of the gate quickly with 3 runs in the first inning off of Carol Blakely-Mundy and then scored the remaining runs against Kelly Copland in an 8 to 1 defeat.  Christine Bassett lead at the plate going 2 for 2.

 

In the final game against Quebec, the Pontiacs relinquished a 3 to 0 lead in the 6th inning on 3 straight hits and 2 errors losing 5 to 3 to Quebec.  Dawn Vanderhorst took the loss with Kristy Freshwater and Catherine Lawrence going 2 for 3 at the plate and Johanna Malisani leading the batting charge going 3 for 3.

 

The Pontiacs then played an exhibition game against Quebec to end the tournament as both teams were no longer in the playoff hunt.

Brampton:

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs participated in the Brampton Invitational tournament playing 5 games on the weekend.  In the first game, the Pontiacs were shutout by the Cambridge Juniors losing 3 to 0.  Kelly Copland took the loss giving up 7 hits during the game.  The Pontiacs were led by Liz Verbeem who went 2 for 3 at the plate and Riekie Dutcher who was 1 for 3 being the only 3 hits of the game.

 

In the second game of the round robin, the Pontiac bats began to come alive in the final inning as they scored 3 runs in a 10 to 4 defeat at the hands of the Brampton Midget team.  Kelly Copland again took the mound in relief of Dawn Vanderhorst who handled the first inning of the game.  Christine Bassett led the Pontiacs at the plate going 3 for 3.

 

By the third game, the bats were working well with the Pontiacs defeating Rochester 10 to 0 behind Kelly Copland’s third game of pitching.  Johanna Malisani led the team going 3 for 4 and scoring 3 times with Riekie Dutcher, Liz Verbeem, Catharine Lawrence and Christine Bassett all going 2 for 4 and scoring a total of 5 times.

 

The fourth game of the round robin was a tight defensive affair with the Pontiacs losing 4 to 2.  Kristy Freshwater and Brenda Brown provided strong offensive support scoring once and moving runners into scoring position.  Dianne Trask also performed well at the plate going 2 for 3.

 

In the playoff round, the Pontiacs again faced the Cambridge Juniors and could not get the bats working having only 2 hits in the game – by Riekie Dutcher and Kathy Sitak.  Kelly Copland took the mound in the 4 to 0 defeat as the Juniors had 8 hits.

HAMILTON PONTIACS LADIES FASTBAL TEAM “THREE-PEATED” BY

WINNING THE GOLD AT THE PWSA CHAMPIONSHIPS!

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs “three-peated” by winning the Gold Medal at the Provincial Women’s Softball Association (PWSA) Grand Championships held in Trenton, Ontario.  The Pontiacs went through the double-knockout tournament undefeated and won the Championship in the finals against the Stratford Intermediates by defeating them 3 to 0.

 

The Pontiacs started off the weekend on the Friday night with a win against the Elmira Intermediates by a score of 5 to 1.  Kelly Copland pitched the win going a strong 7 innings, giving up 3 hits.  The one-two hitters of the Pontiacs, Liz Verbeem and Christine Bassett, lead the way at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring three times.

 

On the Saturday morning, the Pontiacs were in a tight battle against the team from Chepstow.  The score was 0 to 0 until the fifth inning when the home team scored a quick 3 runs on 5 consecutive hits to break open the game.  The Pontiacs responded in the top of the 6th by scoring 4 runs on a key 2 rbi double by Catherine Lawrence and a key 2 rbi single by Kathy Sitak.  Kelly Copland and the defense then shut down the Chepstow team for the remainder of the game for an eventual 4 to 3 win.

 

The Pontiacs then came against the Stratford Intermediates as the only two undefeated teams in the tournament.  The Pontiacs quickly took the lead in the top half of the first inning on a double by Christine Bassett and a run scoring single by Riekie Dutcher.  Dawn Vanderhorst, the winning pitcher, then singled in Riekie for a quick 2 to 0 lead.  The Pontiacs got insurance runs in the 5th and 6th inning behind the hitting of Johanna Malisani (who went 2 for 4) and Diane Trask, who was 1 for 3, to eventually win the game by a score of 5 to 1.

 

In the finals, the Pontiacs again came up against the Stratford team.  Kelly Copland took the mound for the final game and gave up 3 hits for the 3 to 0 win for the Gold Medal.  Liz Verbeem had an excellent day at the plate going 4 for 4 and scoring once.  Catharine Lawrence and Kathy Sitak also helped the cause going 2 for 2 and scoring once.

Tri-County League Championships – Fisherville

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs won the Tri-County League and the Championship on the weekend by defeating the Six Nations Storm in the final 6 to 1.  Kelly Copland pitched the win with Debbie Carter leading at the plate going 3 for 4, scoring once.  Catherine Lawrence also had a strong day at the plate going 2 for 4, scoring once with two rbi’s.

 

Leading up to that final game, the Pontiacs played the Glanbrook Intermediates in their first game of the weekend winning 12 to 0 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst.  The Pontiacs then faced the St. Catharines Intermediates and won 4 to 3 behind the pitching of Kelly Copland and the hitting of Riekie Dutcher and Liz Verbeem who were both 2 for 3 with a run scored.  The next game saw them facing the Six Nations Storm as the undefeated teams met in the double-knockout tournament.  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched a two hitter with Bekki Longboat and Johanna Malisani each going 2 for 3 with a run scored for a final score of 4 to 0.

HAMILTON PONTIACS LADIES FASTBALL TEAM TAKE HOME THE GOLD

AT THE EASTERN CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS!

 

The Hamilton Pontiacs Ladies Fastball Team topped off their best season by winning the Gold Medal at the Eastern Canadian Championships held in Pointe-Aux-Trembles, Quebec.  After bringing home the Gold medal in Ontario by going undefeated in the 12-team double-knockout tournament held in Trenton, Ontario, the progressed to the Easterns to represent the Province of Ontario along with the silver medal winning team from Stratford, Ontario.

 

The Easterns consisted of teams from Quebec, New Brunswick and PEI and were conducted as a 7-team full round robin with a single knock-out playoff round of the top 4 teams in the pool.

 

In the first game of the round robin, the Pontiacs took on the number-one team from Quebec – Les Friends de Montreal and defeated them 6 to 2 behind the pitching of Kelly Copland and the batting of Liz Verbeem, who lead at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring twice.  In the next game, the Pontiacs were defeated by their Ontario rivals, the Stratford Intermediates, by a score of 6 to 5.  Dawn Vanderhorst took the loss on the mound with Kristy Freshwater going 3 for 4 and scoring once with two rbi’s and Christine Bassett going 2 for 4 and scoring once.  In the next game, the Pontiacs came back with a resounding 8 to 0 win over the New Brunswick Intermediates behind the shutout pitching of Carol Blakely-Mundy and the hitting of Dianne Trask who went 2 for 2 with 2 rbi’s and scored twice.  The Quebec host team then gave the Pontiacs a scare as the score was tied 0 to 0 until the fifth inning when the bats came alive and the Pontiacs scored 8 times to win 8 to 0 against the Re Belles.  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the win with Kristy Freshwater and Johanna Malisani each going 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 rbi’s and Catherine Lawrence going 2 for 3 and scoring once.  The Pontiacs then gave up a first inning run which stood the full game for a 1 to 0 defeat against the PEI Yogi’s.  Kelly Copland took the loss on the mound with the bats relatively silent for the Pontiacs as they had only two hits during the game.  The final game of the round robin was against the silver medal winning team in Quebec, Portneuf, and the Pontiacs came out strong scoring 6 times in the first inning leading to a 9 to 1 win behind the one-hit pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst.  Kathy Sitak and Riekie Dutcher contributed to the hitting onslaught going 2 for 3 and 3 for 3 respectively.  The Pontiacs finished the Round Robin in second place with a final total of 4 wins and 2 losses.  PEI was in first place with Les Friends de Montreal in 3rd and Portneuf in 4th.

 

In the Championship round of play, the Pontiacs came up against Les Friends de Montreal and quickly gave up two runs in the first inning.  Kelly Copland pitched a strong game as the Pontiacs stormed back with the bats leading to a 4 to 2 win.  Dawn Vanderhorst went 2 for 3 with 1 rbi and 1 scored run and Debbie Carter was 2 for 2 with one walk.  This moved the Pontiacs into the final game against PEI for the Championship.

 

The game was 0 to 0 until the 5th inning, when Dawn Vanderhorst started the inning with a basehit.  Kathy Sitak then moved her around with a sacrifice bunt and Brenda Brown singled her over to third base.  With two outs, Johanna Malisani then sent a single up the middle to score the go ahead run.  In the 7th inning, Kathy Sitak started the inning off with a single and pinch-runner Krissy Sebastian then came into the game.  Krissy moved to third on a sacrifice and another single by Brenda Brown and Liz Verbeem then drove her home for the second run of the game.  With this added insurance, the game ended with Dawn Vanderhorst pitching a final strikeout!

 

Johanna Malisani, the second baseman of the Pontiacs, was awarded the Tournament MVP for her .435 batting average and excellent defensive play all weekend.
