GORD MARSHALL
INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT (INNERKIP)
The
Hamilton Pontiacs finished in second place in the Gord Marshall Invitational
Tournament on the weekend and, at the same time, was able to help the
tournament achieve a record fund-raising amount for the Canadian Cancer
Society!
In
the first game, the Pontiacs
were defeated 3 to 2 by
the University of
Western Ontario – London
Intermediates. Jenny
Kells took the loss on the mound. The Pontiacs
initially took a 2 run lead in the 4th inning on a lead-off single
by Erin Forman, followed by singles by Riekie Dutcher,
Kris Gordon and Dianne Trask. UWO then got one run back in the top of the
fourth and scored the winning runs in the top of the 6th
inning. The game was called due to time
after the Pontiacs
were unable to score in the bottom of the 6th.
The
Pontiacs then
came up against their league rival Brantford Intermediates and won 6 to 4 in
another time-shortened 6 inning game. Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the win with Elizabeth Verbeem scoring two runs and going 2 for 4
at the plate. Dawn also helped her own
cause going 2 for 3 and scoring one run.
Krissy Sebastian, Kelly
Litwiller and Kathy Sitak pitched in with key singles to help score the runs.
Amanda
Marsh then took the mound against the Milverton Intermediates and pitched a 1
hit, 7 strikeout win of 6 to 0. Kris
Gordon and Riekie Dutcher led at the
plate going 3 for 3 each and scoring 4 times in total. Lori Kostur
had a strong day at the plate going 2 for 3 as did Erin Forman.
After
finishing in second place, the Pontiacs
then came up against UWO again in the semi-finals of the tournament. Dawn Vanderhorst
pitched the 3 to 1 win. Lori Martin put
the Pontiacs
ahead in the second ahead singling and scoring on a triple by Kira Waghorn.
UWO tied the score in the 4th inning and the Pontiacs again came back in the 6th
inning on a lead-off walk by Erin Forman, a single by Riekie
Dutcher and a two rbi double by Kris Gordon.
In
the finals, the Pontiacs
came up short against their home-town rival Hamilton Hurricanes and lost 6 to 2. Amanda Marsh took the loss. Kathy Sitak led at the plate going 2 for 3
and singling in the first run of the game (after Erin Forman singled). The second run was scored by Lori Kostur who was singled in by Elizabeth Verbeem.
