Cam Mitchell 25th Annual Memorial Tournament:
The Hamilton Pontiacs
were defeated 3 to 0 by Team Ontario
in the semi-finals of the Ancaster tournament on the weekend of June 13 -
15th. The tournament was a round-robin schedule with the Pontiacs finishing 3 and
1 before heading into the quarter-finals.
In the round robin, the
first game was held on Friday, June 13th at 7:00 p.m. and the Pontiacs
defeated the Ancaster Midgets 7 to 0 behind the one-hit, three strikeout
and no walks pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst.
Dawn also led at the plate going 2 for 2 and scoring 2 runs. Amanda
Marsh, Dianne Trask and Liz Verbeem
also were strong at the plate scoring once and getting 2 hits each. In
the second game, the Pontiacs
were defeated 8 to 3 by
the Port Perry Seniors. The Pontiacs
gave up 5 runs in the first inning on two errors and 4 hits and then started to
close the gap behind the pitching of Jenny Kells.
Kris Gordon led at the plate going 3 for 3 with a triple and Riekie Dutcher, Christine
Bassett and Kira Waghorn
also helped at the plate getting 2 hits each. The Pontiacs then faced the Ching Juniors for the
third game of the round robin series and behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst defeated the Jrs. by a score of 11
to 0. Liz Verbeem led at the plate going 3 for 3 and scoring 2 times
with Christine Bassett, Riekie Dutcher, and Lori
Kostur having two hits each and scoring once. In the
final game of the round robin, the Pontiacs
played the 8 am game on
Sunday morning against the London Intermediate and won 9 to 0 behind the
pitching of Jenny Kells. Christine Bassett was 4 for 4 and scored 4 times and
Riekie Dutcher went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
The Pontiacs then finished in 5th place in the
overall tournament and moved onto the quarter-finals against the 4th place team
- Kalamazoo.
It was a pitching duel from the start with Amanda Marsh giving up 4 hits, 1
strikeout and 0 walks during the game. The first run of the game was
scored by the Pontiacs
with Kris Gordon leading off with a triple and then scoring on a 2 out single
by Amanda Marsh. The second run was scored in the 5th inning again
by the Pontiacs
with Lori Kostur singling, moving to
second base on Liz Verbeem's basehit and then scoring on a 2 out double by
Riekie Dutcher. The final
score was 2 to 0 and the Pontiacs
moved onto a back-to-back game with Team Ontario.
In the semi-finals, the Pontiacs
bats fell silent as they had only 2 hits (Liz Verbeem and Lori Kostur) and two walks on the offensive side of
the ledger. Team Ontario
score their 3 runs on 3 hits and 4 errors.
The Pontiacs also participated in the memorial
fund-raising game for Cam Mitchell and were proud to be able to contribute to
the Canadian Cancer Society in memory of the former coach of the Ancaster
Intermediates.
