TOURNAMENT RESULTS
St. Catharines
The
Hamilton Pontiacs took home second place in the St. Catharines Invitational
Tournament on the weekend. The
Pontiacs got into the Championship round by going 3 and 1 in the round robin. In the first game of the tournament held
on the Friday evening, the Pontiacs were defeated 6 to 1 by the Whitby
Seniors. The Seniors took the lead
in the 1st inning by scoring 2 runs and never looked back. The Pontiacs were lead at the plate by Kris Gordon who went 2 for 2 with a triple and
scored the Pontiacs only run on an rbi from Kathy
Sitak. Dianne Trask took the loss on the mound. The Pontiacs quickly rebounded on the
Saturday morning by defeating the Brampton Juniors 5 to 1 behind the pitching
of Cathy Rayner and the hitting of Jenn Parrott
who went 3 for 3 including a homerun and two singles. Riekie Dutcher
also had a good game at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring once. Cathy Rayner helped her own cause going
3 for 3 at the plate. In the third
game of the round robin, the Pontiacs defeated the Hamilton Hurricanes 5 to 2
behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst. Kris Gordon
and Riekie Dutcher led at the plate
going 2 for 4 and scoring twice with Jen Calbeck
going 2 for 3 and having 2 rbi’s.
In the final and deciding game of the round robin, the Pontiacs defeated
the Townsend Intermediates 6 to 3 behind the pitching of Aly Freshwater. Lori Kostur
led at the plate going 3 for 3 with a triple and scoring 3 runs. Jen Parrott also tripled and was 2 for 3
at the plate. The
Pontiacs then moved into the Championship round and faced the Brantford
Intermediates. After quickly
falling behind 2 to 1 in the first inning, the Pontiac bats came alive and the
final score was 17 to 2 behind the pitching of Cathy Rayner, who also went 4
for 4 and scored 4 runs. Jen Calbeck also had a great day at the plate going
5 for 5 and scoring 5 times. On to
the Championship game against the Brampton Juniors and the Pontiac bats were
cooled out with the Brampton pitcher recording 8 strikeouts and giving up one
home run to Riekie Dutcher. Dawn
Vanderhorst took the loss.
Newmarket
The
Pontiacs
entered their second tournament of the year and had some challenges in the
round robin portion but came through in the playoffs with several good games to
improve their showing.
In
the first game of the round robin portion of the tournament, the Pontiacs quickly fell
behind 2 to 0 to the Port Perry Juniors in the 3rd inning. The Pontiacs quickly staged a comeback behind the
batting of Johanna Malisani, who was
3 for 3 and scored twice, and Riekie Dutcher
who was 2 for 3 and scored once with 1 rbi and won the game 3 to 2. Dawn
Vanderhorst hit in the winning run in the fifth and final
inning of the game on a two out single.
Alyssa Freshwater pitched the
win. In the second game, Alyssa Freshwater again took the mound and pitched
the team to a 1 to 1 tie until the 6th inning when the Pickering
Juniors scored 3 runs. Christine Bassett led the Pontiacs at the plate going 2 for 3 and
scoring once. In the 3rd
game, the Pontiacs
played the Oakville Juniors and were defeated 12 to 1 in short fashion. Dawn
Vanderhorst took the loss as the Pontiacs made several fielding errors and
were outhit at the plate.
In
the playoff section of the tournament, the Pontiacs faced the Port Perry Midgets and
defeated them 9 to 5 behind the pitching of Dawn
Vanderhorst. Kris Gordon led at the plate going 4 for 5 and
scoring three times with Johanna Malisani
and Christine Bassett also having
good games at the plate going 3 for 4 and scoring twice each. The second game of the day was close
with the Pontiacs
falling behind 1 to 0 against the Pickering Juniors in the second inning and
then falling further behind in the 5th by a score of 3 to 0. The Pontiacs then rallied in the top of the 6th
by scoring three runs behind the hitting of Johanna
Malisani, Riekie Dutcher,
Jen Parrott and Dawn Vanderhorst. With the score tied 3 to 3, the Pontiacs then faltered in
the bottom half of the inning giving up 6 runs to lose the game.
Ancaster
The
Pontiacs
participated in the Ancaster Invitational Tournament moving into the playoff
round on Sunday. The tournament was
highlighted by a memorial service for Cam Mitchell, who originated the tournament
and coached the Ancaster Intermediates for many years.
In
the first game of the tournament, the Pontiacs quickly scored two runs in the
first inning on a base hit by Elizabeth Verbeem
and a home run by Riekie Dutcher but
the Quebec Midgets quickly came back and tied the game in the bottom half of
the inning on two hits. The Quebec team then went
ahead in the fourth inning by a score of 7 to 2 and the Pontiacs responded in the bottom half of the
5th with 5 runs behind the hitting of Cathy Rayner, Jen Calbeck, Elizabeth
Verbeem, Dianne Trask
and Riekie Dutcher to tie the
score. In the top of the seventh, Riekie Dutcher led off the inning with a base hit,
stole second and then scored on the base hit by Jen Parrott. Cathy Rayner pitched the win.
The
Pontiacs
continued on their come from behind winning ways in the second game quickly
falling behind 1 to 0 to the Clarington Juniors until the 3rd inning
when they scored a run based on the lead-off hit by Elizabeth
Verbeem and the run scoring hit by Kris
Gordon. Elizabeth then started
another rally to score the winning run in the 5th inning by leading
off with a base hit, being sacrificed to second by Christine
Bassett and then scoring on the single by Riekie Dutcher.
Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the
win.
In
the third game of the day, the Pontiacs
faced the Quebec Juniors and went down to defeat by a score of 7 to 1. Cathy Rayner took the loss. The Pontiac bats were generally silenced as they
were held to a four hitter with two walks.
Johanna Malisani scored the
only run on a two out base hit by Kris Gordon.
In
the third game of the round robin, the Pontiacs
were defeated by the Kitchener Seniors 3 to 2 in a hard fought game. Alyssa
Freshwater took the loss on the mound with relief help from
Cathy Rayner. Kitchener
went ahead by 2 runs until the 4th inning when the Pontiacs tied the game behind the hitting of Kris Gordon and Jen Parrott with a run scoring hit
by Kristy Pearce and Jen Calbeck.
The Kitchener Senior then came into the bottom of the 5th
inning to score the winning run with time constraints then ending the
game.
In
the final game of the round robin, the Oakville Juniors took the lead in the
first inning but were stymied by the Pontiacs who scored 5 runs in the 5th
and an additional 2 runs in the 6th to win the game 7 to 2 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst. Riekie Dutcher
led at the plate going 4 for 4 and scoring twice with Kris
Gordon going 3 for 4 and scoring once and Kathy Sitak going 2 for 4 with 3 rbi’s.
In
the playoff round, the Pontiacs
were matched against the Quebec Juniors and quickly fell behind 2 to 0 in the
second inning. Cathy Rayner took
the loss on the mound as the Pontiac
bats were silenced by the pitching of the Quebec Juniors. Riekie Dutcher
led at the plate going 1 for 2 with 1 walk.
Kitchener
The
Hamilton Pontiacs played well this past weekend in the Kitchener tournament but were stymied in the
playoff round by the Byron Intermediates.
The Pontiacs
were knocked out in the quarter finals of the tournament.
In
the first game of the round robin, the Pontiacs
tied the Byron Intermediates 7 to 7 behind the pitching of Dianne Trask.
The Pontiacs
quickly fell behind in this game giving up 6 runs in the first two
innings. The team fought back
inning by inning scoring two in the third and two more in the 4th
with the tying runs occurring in the 6th. Elizabeth
Verbeem led at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring once and Kris Gordon and Jen Parrott also helped the cause
going two for 3 and scoring once each.
In
the second game of the tournament, the Pontiac
bats came alive as they defeated the Kitchener Angels 16 to 0 with Elizabeth Verbeem and Kris
Gordon going 3 for 3 and scoring 3 times. Lori Kostur
also had a good day at the plate going 2 for 2 and scoring twice.
In
the third game, the Pontiacs defeated the Waterloo Intermediates 12 to 0 with Kris Gordon, Riekie
Dutcher, Christine Bassett,
Dawn Vanderhorst, Elizabeth Verbeem, Johanna
Malisani and Dawn Vanderhorst
all having good days at the plate going 2 for 2 and scoring.
In
the playoff round, the Pontiacs
finished in 5th place and came against the Mississauga Havoc for the
first game. The Pontiacs quickly
took the lead on a base hit by Elizabeth Verbeem
to start the game and the run scoring single by Lori
Kostur. In
the 4th inning, the Pontiacs
broke open the game by scoring 3 runs on the hits of Cathy Rayner, Elizabeth Verbeem, Lori
Kostur and a three run scoring triple by Riekie Dutcher.
The Pontiac
scoring was concluded in the 5th inning by a lead-off hit by Kira Waghorn who scored on
a sacrifice by Johanna Malisani.
The
Pontiacs then came against the Byron Intermediates who quickly scored two runs
in the first two innings to put the Pontiacs behind the eight-ball. The Pontiacs ran out of time as the game ended in
the 6th inning as the Pontiacs
were clawing back on the scoreboard.
Byron progressed into the finals of the tournament.
Brampton
The
Brampton tournament was called on the final Sunday due to rain as the Pontiacs
were making there comeback in the playoff round of the tournament. The Pontiacs had just defeated the
Hamilton Hurricanes 7 to 0 behind the no-hit pitching of Cathy Rayner when the
rains began to fall. Kris Gordon led at the plate going 3 for 3, scoring
once and having 2 rbi’s. Jen
Calbeck also had 2 rbi’s in the game. The Pontiacs were due to face the
Pickering Heat Juniors in the quarter-finals when the tournament was cancelled.
The
round robin portion of the tournament was “interesting” for the
team as they began the day facing the Oakville Juniors and were defeated 10 to
4 behind the pitching of Dianne Trask
and Riekie Dutcher. Riekie also led at the plate going 3 for
3 and scoring once while Elizabeth Verbeem
went 2 for 3 and scored twice. In
the second game, the Pontiacs improved defensively giving up two hits behind Dawn Vanderhorst on the mound and defeated the
Newmarket Juniors 10 to 0. Dawn
also helped her cause at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring twice. Jen Calbeck and Lori
Kostur also were 2 for 3 and scored twice to help the
cause. The Pontiacs then came up
against the Chepstow Intermediates and were leading a close game 1 to 0 after
having scored in the first inning until the bottom of the 6th inning
when Chepstow broke the game open and scored 8 runs on 2 walks, 3 hits and 3
errors. Dawn
Vanderhorst led at the plate going 2 for 3. In the final game of the day, the
Pontiac bats were silenced behind the two hit pitching of the Kitchener Seniors
and they were defeated 7 to 0
Innerkip
The
Hamilton Pontiacs started the Innerkip Tournament on a positive note defeating
the Clarkson Scarletts' 8 to 3 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst and the
hitting of Kathy Sitak who went 3 for 3 scoring twice and having two
rbi's. Riekie Dutcher, Kristy Pearce and Kris Gordon were also
strong at the plate going 2 for 3. In the next game of the round robin,
the Pontiacs were defeated 9 to 4 by the Chepstow Diamonds. Dianne Trask
and Cathy Rayner took the loss with Kris Gordon again being strong at the plate
going 2 for 2 with a walk and scoring once. The Pontiacs then
rebounded by defeating the Byron Blaze 10 to 3 behind the pitching of Aly
Freshwater. Johanna Malisani led at the plate going 3 for 3 and scoring 3
times and Lori Kostur homered.
As a
result, the Pontiacs finished in first place in their portion of the round
robin and moved on to the semi-finals were they were defeated by the cross-town
rivals, the Hamilton Hurricanes, by a score of 9 to 3. Cathy Rayner took
the loss with Johanna Malisani homering in the last inning of the game.
PWSA Intermediate I Grand Championships - Byron
The
Hamilton Pontiacs brought home the Gold at the Ontario Provincial Championships
on the weekend going undefeated throughout the tournament. The Pontiacs also took the individual
awards on the weekend with: Dawn
Vanderhorst was named Top Pitcher for the weekend with 4 wins and one no hitter
pitched; Riekie Dutcher was named Top Batter with a .818 average and several
multi-base hits; Johanna Malisani was named Most Valuable Player with a .414
batting average, several key rbi’s, and great defensive play.
The
Pontiacs won
the first game at the double-knockout tournament on Friday night behind the
no-hit pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst by defeating Townsend 7 to 0. Elizabeth Verbeem started off the game
with a walk with Johanna Malisani tripling her in and Riekie Dutcher then
singling to score Johanna. The Pontiacs continued in the
first inning scoring 5 runs with a key triple by Jen Calbeck plating two
runs. Dawn Vanderhorst then scored
in the 3rd inning on a basehit by Kathy
Sitak and Riekie Dutcher opened the 4th inning with a triple and was
hit in by Krissy Sebastian single.
Defensively, the minimum number of batters came to the plate in the 5
inning game as the only runner to go to first on a walk in the 2nd
inning was quickly picked off stealing second from the throw by Jen Calbeck and
the tag by Riekie Dutcher.
In
the second game, the Pontiacs
again quickly took the lead by scoring 4 runs in the first inning. Elizabeth Verbeem and Riekie Dutcher
quickly singled and Kris Gordon then plated them by tripling. Jen Parrott then brought Kris in with a
single and singles by Kathy Sitak and Jen Calbeck brought in Jen. Jenn Parrott led the Pontiacs at the plate this game going 4 for 4
with a home run. Dawn Vanderhorst
pitched the win and gave up 5 hits.
The
Pontiacs then
defeated the Port Colborne Commettes 12 to 0 behind
the hitting of Johanna Malisani who was 3 for 4 and scored 3 times, Riekie
Dutcher who was 3 for 3 including a home run, and Kris Gordon who was 3 for 3
including a triple. Dawn
Vanderhorst and Alyssa Freshwater combined for the win on the mound holding the
Commettes to 4 hits.
The
final game of the day was played at 7:00
p.m. and was a close contest throughout the game . The Pontiacs first run was scored as Johanna
Malisani singled in the 3rd, stole second base and Riekie Dutcher
then plated her with a double. In
the fifth inning, the Pontiacs
then moved ahead with Elizabeth Verbeem singling, moving to second on a passed
ball and then scoring on Riekie Dutcher’s
double. Riekie then scored on Kris
Gordon’s double to give the Pontiacs
a 3 to 0 lead. The Diamonds then
quickly came back and plated a run in the bottom of the fifth on three
singles. Jen Calbeck then scored in
the sixth on a single with Johanna Malisani then providing an insurance run in
the 7th inning. Dawn
Vanderhorst pitched the win.
On
the Sunday, the Pontiacs
again faced the Chepstow Diamonds and quickly took the lead in the first inning
on a fielder’s choice by Johanna Malisani, a walk by Riekie Dutcher and a
single by Kris Gordon. Riekie
Dutcher led at the plate for the Pontiacs
going 3 for 3 with a walk and scoring 3 times. Kris Gordon was also strong at the plate
going 4 for 4 and scoring twice. Jen Parrott helped the cause going 3 for
4 and scoring once. Alyssa
Freshwater pitched the win with relief assistance from Dawn Vanderhorst.
The
Pontiacs now
move on to the Eastern Canadian Championships which are being held in Fredericton, New
Brunswick.
Eastern Canadian Championships, Nova Scotia
the Hamilton Pontiacs Ladies Fastpitch team came home with the Gold Medal in the Eastern
Canadians held in Fredericton,
New Brunswick. The Pontiacs went undefeated throughout the round
robin and the playoffs with Dawn Vanderhorst taking home the top pitcher award
for the tournament.
The Round Robin started off with a
game against the New Brunswick
2 representative – Bases Loaded whom the Pontiacs defeated 7 to 0 behind the one hit
pitching of Cathy Rayner. Allison
Russell led at the plate with one walk and a home run scoring twice with Lori
Kostur also adding to the scoring by singling 2 out of 3 at bats and scoring
twice. Jen Calbeck and Kira Waghorn added to the hitting onslaught by going 2 for
2 at the plate.
In the second game, the Pontiacs came up against
their Eastern rivals, the PEI
Yogis and defeated them 7 to 0 behind the 2 hit pitching of Sarah Wright. Riekie Dutcher led at the plate going 4
for 4 with a home run and scoring twice.
Liz Verbeem also helped the cause going 3 for 4 and scoring twice with
Jen Parrott scoring once and Dianne Trask going 1 for 3 with 1 rbi.
The Quebec 1 team, Lac St. Louis, was the next
challenge for the Pontiacs
with both teams undefeated in the round robin. The Pontiacs won 8 to 2 with the game being close
until the 7th inning when the Pontiacs
opened up the scoring by scoring 4 runs.
Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the win giving up 9 hits and striking out 8
batters. Kris Gordon led at the
plate going 4 for 4 and scoring 3 times.
Jen Parrott also helped the cause going 3 for 4 and scoring twice.
The Pontiacs finished in first place in the round
robin and advanced to the semi-finals of the playoffs against PortNeuf. Cathy
Rayner took the mound, with relief from Dawn Vanderhorst, and defeated the
Portneuf Quebec 2 team by a score of 2 to 0. The Pontiacs got both runs in the first inning
behind a single by Liz Verbeem, a sacrifice by Johanna Malisani, and a run
scoring single by Riekie Dutcher.
In the finals, the Pontiacs again came up against Lac St. Louis
and defeated them 9 to 0 behind the 3 hit pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst (with 5
strikeouts as well). Johanna
Malisani was 2 for 3 at the plate scoring twice, Riekie Dutcher was 3 for 3 and
scored 3 times, and Kris Gordon was 3 for 3 and scored 3 times as well. Kathy Sitak also helped the cause going
2 for 3 at the plate with 2 rbi’s.
