HAMILTON PONTIACS

2006 TOURNAMENT RESULTS

St. Catharines

The Pontiacs won the Silver in the St. Catharines Invitational Tournament.  The tournament began with the Pontiacs facing their fellow Tri-County League teams from Brantford, Townsend, Clarkson and St. Catharines.  In the first game, the Pontiacs rallied in the top of the 5th inning by scoring 5 runs to defeat Brantford 6 to 2 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst.  Krissy Sebastian started the rally by singling followed by Liz Verbeem, Riekie Dutcher, Dawn Vanderhorst and Kathy Sitak who all scored.  In the second game of the day, the Pontiacs played to a 4 – 4 tie (due to time limit constraints) with Townsend by again rallying in the 6th inning to score 3 runs to tie the game.  Dianne Trask got the win and helped her own cause by going 2 for 3 at the plate and scoring once.  The Pontiacs then defeated Clarkson 5 to 4 by again scoring the winning run in the 6th inning on a home run by Kris Gordon.  Riekie Dutcher also homered in the game to score two runs in the 5th inning.  Jenny Kells pitched the win.   In the final game of the Saturday, the Pontiacs and the St. Catharines Angels were delayed to start the game until 10:20 p.m. due to weather conditions and subsequently cancelled the game in the 3rd inning as the lights went out due to curfew.

On Sunday, the Pontiacs moved into the Championship round against University of Western Ontario summer team from London and defeated them by scoring 4 key runs in the 3rd inning to break the game open.  Kris Gordon again homered and led at the plate going 3 for 3 and scoring twice.  Jen Calbeck also helped at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring once.  Jenny Kells pitched the win with 2 strikeouts and 5 hits.  The Pontiacs then came against the St. Catharines Angels and quickly fell behind 4 to 0 on 23 hits and 2 errors in the first inning and eventually lost the Championship by a score of 5 to 2.  Krissy Sebastian was strong at the plate going 2 for 3 and Jen Calbeck and Lori Kostur singled in the 5th inning and scored beginning an attempt at a rally but they were held off the scoresheet for the remainder of the game.  Dawn Vanderhorst took the loss on the mound.

Newmarket

The Pontiacs moved into the playoff round of the Newmarket Tournament but were defeated by the eventual winner of the tournament, Amherst.  In the first game of the round robin, the Pontiacs were defeated by the Kitchener Seniors 5 to 1 with Jenny Kells taking the loss on the mound.  The Pontiacs bats were relatively quiet with the team striking out 5 times in the 5 inning game.  Elizabeth Verbeem led at the plate going 2 for 3.  In the second game, the bats came alive with the Pontiacs defeating Aurora Seniors 7 to 2 behind the bats of Riekie Dutcher (3 for 3, scoring once), Christine Bassett (2 for 3) and Kris Gordon (2 for 3 and scoring twice).  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the 3 hitter.  The Pontiacs then received a bye as a team had to withdraw from the tournament at the last minute.  On to the playoffs, and the Pontiacs faced Amherst and were leading 2 to 0 in the third inning behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst and the hitting of Riekie Dutcher who homered to score Christine Bassett from second base.  Amherst came back in the 6th inning to tie the game and then came full-force in the 7th to score three more.  The Pontiac rally started in the 7th by Christine Bassett who tripled and scored but unfortunately they could not come back all the way.

Ancaster

The Hamilton Pontiacs finished out of the playoffs after playing several close games on the weekend.  The first game of the tournament saw the Pontiacs face their Tri-County Tournament rivals the St. Catharines Intermediates and be defeated 2 to 1.  The Pontiacs took the lead in the first inning on an rbi single by Kris Gordon after Johanna Malisani had singled.  The St. Catharines Intermediates then tied it in the 3rd inning and went ahead in the 6th.  Jenny Kells pitched the defensive struggle with assistance from Dawn Vanderhorst.

In the second game of the tournament, the Pontiac bats came alive as they defeated the Quebec Seniors 7 to 0 behind the pitching of Dawn Vanderhorst and the bats of Elizabeth Verbeem (4 for 4), Lori Kostur (2 for 3), Shari Young (3 for 3), and Kris Gordon 3 for 4 with a triple and a double.  The next game saw the Pontiacs face the Kalamazoo team from the US.  The game was a very tough defensive struggle with Jenny Kells pitching a 6 hitter.  The Pontiac bats were held quiet with the Kalamazoo pitcher throwing a 3 hitter with one walk.  In the 7th inning, the Kalamazoo team scored the winning run on three successive hits.  The final game of the tournament saw the Pontiacs face the Pickering Junior squad and again, the game came down to the final innings.  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the loss giving up 2 runs in the first inning and the final run in the 5th.  The Pontiacs were held scoreless until the 6th inning when Riekie Dutcher singled, Dawn Vanderhorst singled to move her along and Kathy Sitak singled to score the run.  The Pontiacs finished out of the playoff round of the tournament.

Kitchener

The Pontiacs progressed to the playoff round again in the Kitchener tournament again being defeated by the eventual tournament champion, the Oakville Juniors.  The tournament is an ‘all players bat’ tournament with the Pontiacs batting their full line-up of 14 players each game!   Pitching is also limited to a maximum of 12 outs per pitcher which results in two pitchers being involved in every game at a minimum.

In the first game, the Pontiacs came up again against the Aurora Seniors and fought back in the 5th inning to tie the score at 2 to 2.  The game was eventually called due to time limit.  Johanna Malisani and Kathy Sitak scored the two runs for the Pontiacs behind the joint pitching of Jenny Kells and Dawn Vanderhorst. In the second game of the day, the Pontiacs came against the Milverton team and quickly took charge by scoring 4 runs in the first inning and 5 runs in the 3rd.  Lori Kostur led the charge going 3 for 3 with two singles and a home run.  Riekie Dutcher also went 3 for 3 and Kris Gordon and Jen Calbeck also went 2 for 3 at the plate as the Pontiacs won 12 to 2.  In the third game of a very hot Saturday, the Pontiacs came up against the Brampton Seniors and were handily defeated 12 to 1.  The Pontiacs could not get their defense or offence on track during the game as although Riekie Dutcher started the first inning off by scoring the first run of the game, the rest of the game was hit by numerous fielding errors and sleeping bats.

After a night’s sleep, the Pontiacs came back ‘refreshed’ to face a very busy and long hot Sunday.  First game of the day was a return against Milverton and the team quickly scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning to take charge.  Christine Bassett, Dianne Trask, Lori Kostur and Jenny Kells worked their bats to score the three runs that won the game.  The next back to back game was against the Byron Intermediates and the Pontiac bats again came alive in the first inning scoring 5 runs to take charge of the game.  Dawn Vanderhorst, Christine Bassett, and Riekie Dutcher were all 2 for 3 and scoring twice in the game.  In the third back to back game of the day, the Pontiacs faced Chepstow and again quickly came alive by scoring 4 runs in the first inning.  Debbie Carter, Shannon MacKenzie and Jen Calbeck all contributed to the scoring by going 2 for 2 at the plate.  By the fourth game of the day, the Pontiacs were tiring in the heat and faced a shorter line-up in the Oakville Juniors.  The Pontiacs quickly went ahead 2 to 0 on the hitting of Riekie Dutcher, Kris Gordon and Jen Calbeck but unfortunately could not hold silent the Oakville bats as they came alive in the 6th inning to defeat the Pontiacs.

Brampton

The Pontiacs lost to the eventual tournament winner – Clarington – at the Brampton tournament.  In the first game on the Friday evening, the Pontiacs faced the Port Perry Juniors and took the lead in the first inning 2 to 0 on a single by Elizabeth Verbeem and an eventual rbi single by Kris Gordon.  Dawn Vanderhorst held the Port Perry Jrs. bats silent until the 3rd inning when errors with 2 hits resulted in them scoring 3 runs.  The Pontiacs staged a rally in the 6th inning behind the base hits of Riekie Dutcher and Kris Gordon and scored 2 runs and left the tying runs on base to end the game.

In the second game of the tournament, the Pontiacs faced the Oakville Juniors again this season and went into extra innings to lose a close game 1 to 0.  Jenny Kells pitched the loss with Riekie Dutcher going 2 for 4 at the plate.  The Pontiacs then faced the Brampton Midgets and quickly took the lead by scoring 4 runs in the first inning behind the strong hitting of Elizabeth Verbeem, Christine Bassett, Riekie Dutcher and Kris Gordon.  Dawn Vanderhorst kept the bats silent on the other side until the 4th inning when she gave up 2 of her 4 hits for the game.  Johanna Malisani was also strong at the plate going 2 for 3 and scoring once in the 6 to 2 win.  The Pontiacs then came against the St. Catharines Angels for another tournament and were defeated 2 to 0 in another close defensive game.  Dianne Trask and Jenny Kells shared the pitching duties while Elizabeth Verbeem was the lead batter for the Pontiacs going 2 for 3 at the plate.  In the next game, the Pontiac bats were awoken and they quickly scored 4 runs in the first 2 innings behind the hitting of Christine Bassett and Riekie Dutcher who were each 3 for 3 and scored 3 times each.  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the 10 to 0 win.  In the final game of the tournament, the Pontiacs came up short behind the pitching of Jenny Kells and lost 4 to 0 to Clarington.  Kathy Sitak was solid at bat going 2 for 3 as was Jenny Kells but it was for naught at the Pontiacs could not plate a run during the game.

Innerkip

The Pontiacs finished in second place at the Innerkip Invitational tournament after losing to their rivals, the Hamilton Hurricanes by a score of 4 to 2 in the finals.  The Pontiacs donated their winnings to the Cancer Society in commemoration of the sponsorship of the tournament.

The Pontiacs went through the tournament undefeated in the round robin.  In the 5:15 pm game on the Saturday, the Pontiacs scored their only run in the 6th inning when Johanna Malisani singled and then scored on a basehit by Kathy Sitak.  Kris Gordon was active at the plate going 3 for 3 but was unable to score a run.  Dianne Trask took the loss on the mound.  In the early morning game on Sunday, the Pontiacs took to the field against Chepstow and quickly took the lead 4 to 0 as their bats came awake.  Johanna Malisani again started the action by tripling in the first inning and going 2 for 2.  Riekie Dutcher, Jen Calbeck, Dawn Vanderhorst and Dianne Trask also were active at the plate getting 2 hits each.  Jenny Kells pitched the win.  The Pontiacs then took on the Clarkson Juniors with Dawn Vanderhorst on the mound.  The bats kept active and quickly scored 6 runs in the first two innings.  Dawn Vanderhorst helped her cause going 2 for 2 and scoring once.  Christine Bassett, Jen Calbeck and Kris Gordon also helped at the plate with 2 hits each.

In the finals, the Pontiac bats went quiet with Riekie Dutcher leading the charge with a home run, double and single and scoring twice but all others held to only one hit.  Jenny Kells took the loss on the mound throwing a 4 hitter with one strikeout.

On the Sunday, the Pontiacs were in position to move forward to a medal position and played against Chepstow in their first game.  Chepstow quickly took the lead 2 to 0 in the first inning.  The Pontiac bats came alive in the 4th to tie the score and again in the 5th to take the lead 3 to 2.  The game was broken open in the 7th inning as the Pontiacs scored 4 with 4 consecutive hits.  Several players contributed with Johanna Malisani, Riekie Dutcher, Kris Gordon and Kathy Sitak all having 2 hits each.  Dawn Vanderhorst pitched the win.

In the finals, the Pontiacs needed to defeat the St. Catharines Angels twice to win the gold medal and in the first game, took the lead in the 2nd inning behind a lead-off walk by Kris Gordon and a run scoring double by Kathy Sitak.  The Angels tied the score in the 3rd inning and the game went into extra innings with the Angels plating the winning run.  Jenny Kells took the loss.
