John Denbow, feeling strongly against slavery, enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 64. He told them he was 44 years old when he enlisted in Company K of the 78th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, as did four of his sons. He died in a military hospital in Paducah, Kentucky, of "chronic dysentery." According to Carl J. Denbow of Athens, Ohio, John Denbow is probably buried in a military cemetery, most likely Mound City National Cemetery near Cairo, Illinois. From the "Spirit of Democracy", May 14, 1862 (Catherine Fedorchak's Monroe County Records, Vol. IX)-- "Died in the service of his country at Paducah, Ky. on the 14th of April last, Mr. John Denbow of Lewisville.
