Rules of Urban Exploration
1. ALWAYS BE PREPARED.

Never go into any kind of building without the proper equipment. These include: Old and tattered clothing, proper lighting (I recommend a Mag Lite for best lighting, durability, and battery consumption. Be aware these are illegal so do not whip them out in public), proper layering (winter U.E. can be quite harmful to you if you aren't wearing enough so bundle when going out into the elements), respiration devices (Aesbestos and mould can be found in many old buildings, it can be harmful when inhaled for an extended period of time so be aware and take a mask or something), 2 way radios, a cell phone. Without any one of these items, U.E. can either be very dangerous or just be a waste of time.

2. DO NOT BE SEEN.

Urban Exploration usually means trespassing and that, ladies and gentlemen, is illegal in many parts, if not all, of Canada and the United States. I think the maximum fine in Hamilton for trespassing is $70 but I may be wrong. Either way its not worth the risk, for your own well being and for the well being of the building/site. If cops see people frequenting the building/site, they will take higher precautions in securing it and they will keep a steady eye on it. at all times.

3. EXPLORE ONLY, NO VANDALISING.

This is one of the biggest rules of U.E. in my opinion. When you go into a building, PLEASE respect the building and don't intentionally damage anything in it.You can take things as souvenirs, like old posters, chairs, things like that but please don't go around intentionally breaking glass, ripping of paint/wallpaper, hammering holes in walls, or otherwise damaging the building. The biggest no-no in a building is DON'T SET FIRE TO IT! It's not only extremely damaging to the building but it risks not only yours but anyones lives in or outside of the building and it costs the city lots of money to clean up your stupidity. If you want to set a fire, go to camp and roast marsmallows, leave it out of the buildings please.

4. BE AWARE OF EVERYTHING/ONE

Abandoned buildings are always exposed to weathering, vandalism, and fire damage so be aware that some spots of the building can be unsafe for your journey and you should stay away. Another danger is bums or junkies living inside the building. They will usually leave you alone but some of these people are mentally disturbed and may harm you because they see you as a problem. If you see someone, turn back or as a last resort, be ready to fight.

5. ENJOY YOURSELF!

Urban Exploration should be fun. You shouldn't feel uptight about it, if you do, U.E. isn't for you. Socialize with your friends and enjoy the history of the building. You'll be surprised how your imagination floats away while you're in an old building.

Now if you feel you've understood the rules, move onto the Journal section and read about some of the journey's our group has had! :-)
