Transporter

The Transporter is a matter-energy conversion device used to provide a convenient means of transportation. The device briefly converts an object or life form into energy, then transmits that energy to the destination, where it takes the form of the original transportee. Transporters can't function through energy shields.

Transporter technology is one of the trademarks of Star Trek, although not many people know the real reason for its inclusion in Star Trek - it definitely wasn't divine inspiration. As a young producer with a low budget, Gene Roddenberry faced the dilemma of having landings on planets without spending mega-bucks on expensive shuttle-landing scenes. As they say, necessity is the mother of invention, and the Transporter was born.

Transporters are theoretically feasible, except they would require a power output equivalent to the Sun. Oh well, better luck next time.
