CONDITIONS OF PLAY

Hambleden Bridge club has adopted the codes of practice for behaviour at the table follow those issued by the EBU and fully endorsed by the Berks & Bucks CBA. A full explanation is on the notice board.

Permitted conventions are those defined in the Orange Book as EBU level 2 with an extension allowing any defence to 1NT openings (level 3). In practical terms this means you may not use the Multi-2 bid or open 1NT with a hand containing a singleton.

At this level of competition the club believes that psyches are inappropriate as is the case at the Berks & Berks CBA Friendly events but we realize that we cannot ban them. We do insist on EBU20b convention cards for those deploying psychic bids. Any psyches should be reported to the TD on the day while the opponents are present to agree the facts. A register is kept of all reported psyches and misbids.

Provided you finish your boards early you may inspect the curtain cards (but not the cards themselves) by mutual consent of the table without calling the TD for permission. Please make sure that curtain cards and travelers are placed in their right places.

Most directors have attended EBU training courses and will attempt to deal with any infractions fairly and politely. A director's ruling may be challenged but only at the end of play. A panel of directors will be convened to hear any complaint and rule before the score is considered final.

Results are posted to the website and are normally available within two hours of the end of play. People should check their scores and report any errors. Scores become final after 3 days. To allow those without internet access to check quali-final events (e.g. Chiltern Bridge League Elimination Pairs) this is extended to the next session when the travelers will be posted.

AFFILIATIONS

The club is affiliated to the EBU through the Berks & Bucks CBA.

The club has recently joined the Chiltern League and players may enter the League’s events.

CONVENTION CARDS

All players at duplicate bridge sessions are supposed to have a convention card (CC) available for use by their opponents. Historically the club was founded by people graduating from the same classes and with the same understandings and agreements. Therefore there was little need for CCs. You may play without a convention card provided you meet all the conditions shown below:-

1        Play 'Standard English Foundation' or a natural system of comparable simplicity _ A convenient minor or ‘phony’ club (as the only alertable call) for those playing five card majors. Light openings under the rule of 19 or 20. Natural opening two bids may be weak, intermediate or strong. The Acol 2C bid is the general game force opening.

2   Only use add-ons of any simple devices that are covered by an

announcement at the two level _ basic Stayman and red suit transfers.

3   Use simple Blackwood and standard take-out doubles.

4        Use standard carding as shown on your scorecard.

People with more complex systems or with agreements that may be considered anyway unusual should either complete the section on conventions to be found on the score card or bring an appropriate completed form as issued by the EBU and available via a download from their site. All players who have agreements that allow natural 1NT overcalls or open 2NT with a singleton must highlight this fact on their convention card. The easy way to comply is to complete the back page of one EBU21 scorecard and then bring with you to subsequent sessions.

Anyone reserving the right to make psychic bids must a have a full EBU20b convention card to allow the adjudicating panel to access the bid and partner’s reaction to it. Failure to comply will result in an artificial score to the benefit of the non-offending pair. People who make deviations (single point departures from agreed ranges) should amend their convention card to cover the deviation once it has been repeated.

Anyone progressing in outside competition (county or district events) should have a properly completed convention card. Assistance is available in the preparation and if doubt you should consult with Mike Bennett.
