In a front view create a 12 point circle of some radius via the lathing of a 2 point spline as described earlier in this tutorial. Then create another two point spline and use the Model Align Points feature to line up the right-most point of the two point spline with the second set of points inward from the left-most point on the recently created circle. Lathe the two point spline using a lathe setting of 8 and delete the excess points. Select the 8 point circle and Model Rotate 90 around the X-axis. Select Inverse and move the 12 point circle a few grid spaces above the top of the eight point circle. Extrude the 12 point circle 9 times translating each extrusion down only the Y-axis near one row of points on the 8 point circle and translate the ninth extrusion a few grid spaces past the bottom of the 8 point circle. Selecting only one group of points from an extrusion of the 12 point circle and a corresponding row of one or two points on the 8 point circle. Use Model Align Points to align only on the Y-axis with the value of the selected points from the 8 point circle (Min if the points are below the extruded set and Max if above) and continue until all 8 sets of the extruion are aligned. In a Perspective view select only the eight point circle and move it outside the extrusion along the Z-axis only. Extrude the 8 point circle back along the Z-axis until the opposite end protrudes from the other side of the 12 point extrusion. Zoom in and select a point of the 12 point extruded cylinder that corresponds with one on the closest 8 point circle and delete the curves leading from it towards the center of the outside face of the cylinder (if you pick the top most point delete the curve leading down, for the left most the curve leading right and vice versa) repeating until there is a squareish, stepped hole on either side of the extrusion. Now translate and weld the corresponding points of the 8 point circle to those of the holes on the respective sides of the 12 point extrusion. Peak each curve connecting the 8 point circles on either end. Square Select only the top points of the 12 point extrusion and extrude once more only a little along the Y-axis, then Scale a little along all axes. Connect corresponding points on this newly extruded portion to form 5 separate 4 point patches capping the top of the peg. Extend the bottom points of the 12 point extrusion downward a few more grid spaces along the Y-axis. If you wish to get rid of the 3 point patches at the corner of either hole, select one point on either 8 point circle and select a curve following the circle's shape, not either cylinder's. Choose Model Subdivide Select Curve uncheck the box beside Only Select Part and type 2 in the entry field then click OK. Repeat the process for the other 8 point circle and add splines to connect the new corresponding points. Save current progress. peg_insert.hmp
