ANOTHER VIEW OF THE NEW INSTRUMENT PANEL. MADE A INSTRUMENT PANEL AND INSTALLED IT
WHILE THE CRASH DAMAGE WAS BEING REPAIRED I ALSO INSTALLED SOME SEATS REPAIRS COMPLETE TO THE WING RIB AT THE FUSELAGE.
SOME DAMAGE DONE TO THE FUSE AS WELL. REPAIR COMPLETE,   READY TO REDO THE COVERING.
DAMAGE TO THE TRAILING EDGE, IN THIS PICTURE A NEW PIECE HAS BEEN GLUED IN IN TO REPLACE THE CRUSHED SECTION. JUST AFTER TAKEOFF I TOOK MY EYES OF THE PLANE FOR A SECOND TO GLANCE AT THE THROTTLE SETTING.    WHEN I LOOKED BACK IT WAS IN THE GROUND.

CONSTRUCTION A NEW 2:1 GEAR BOX FOR THE AXI MOTOR FOR INSTALLATION IN THE 1/4 SCALE TAYLORCRAFT

THE SPUR GEAR IS A 70 TOOTH 32 PITCH "KIMBROUGH" GEAR - THE PINION GEAR IS A 34 TOOTH GEAR WHICH I CUT FROM ALUMINUM.   THE GEAR BOX FRAME WAS MADE FROM A PIECE OF 2" X 3" EXTRUDED ALUMINUM BOX.  HERE IT IS THE MILLING MACHINE GETTING SOME LIGHTENING HOLES DRILLED IN THE SIDES. gearbox1.jpg (64805 bytes)

ONCE FINISHED HE MOVED OUT TO MY DAUGHTER DIANE'S PLACE TO GET OUTFITTED WITH A HAT AND SOME FANCY CLOTHES. PinusHat.jpg (87106 bytes) WHEN HE GOT OUTFITTED HE MOVED BACK HOME AND MADE SEVERAL SITTINGS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF HIS LAWN CHAIR. P-Chair.jpg (81393 bytes)
IT TOOK SEVERAL WEEKS OF PART TIME WORK TO GET PINUS TO THIS STAGE.    THERE WAS A LOT OF TRIAL AND ERROR IN MAKING THE JOINTS WORK RIGHT AND TO GET THE AXIAL ROTATION SO THAT HE COULD CROSS HIS LEGS AND ARMS. THE COWL IS COMPLETED AND INSTALLED.      THE LETTER IS ON THE FUSELAGE.          NEXT IS TO FLY IT WITH THE COWL ON, TO SEE IF IT FLYS OK.
A TRIAL FITTING OF THE COWL - ALL LOOKS OK -  I AM ALWAYS WORRIED THAT AFTER ALL THAT WORK THE COWL WON'T FIT PROPERLY OR THERE WILL BE INTERFERENCE SOMEWHERE.
ALL THE PIECES - THE COWL JUST OUT OF THE MOLD, THE MOLD, THE PLUG.  

 

AFTER FIBER GLASSING THE PLUG TO FORM THE MOLD,  THE PLUG WOULD NOT COME OUT OF THE MOLD.  AFTER SOME INGENUITY WITH WOOD SCREW THE PLUG FINALLY BROKE LOOSE.  EITHER I HAD NOT APPLIED ENOUGH WAX TO FORM A GOOD PARTING AGENT OR THE PAINT REACTED WITH THE RESIN.   ANYWAY THE MOLD WAS A WRITE-OFF, FORTUNATELY THE PLUG WAS OK AFTER SOME SANDING . . . TRY AGAIN !
NOW THAT I FOUND OUT THE TAYLORCRAFT WOULD REALLY FLY I STARTED MAKING THE COWL.   FIRST MAKE THE PLUG NEXT THE MOLD AND FINALLY THE FIBERGLASS COWL .  IN THE FIRST PICTURE THE PLUG IS BEING PAINTED.
THE BIG DAY HAS ARRIVED, 16 APRIL 2004.  THAT IS ME WITH THE BIG SMILE AT THE FIELD JUST PRIOR TO THE MAIDEN FLIGHT.     AND FLY IT DID,  I WAS EXTREMELY PLEASED WITH THE WAY IT HANDLED AND LANDED.     HOWEVER I AM SAD TO SAY THAT ON THE 3rd FLIGHT THAT DAY THE ENGINE QUIT JUST AFTER LIFT OFF,  IT STALLED AND DID  A CARTWHEEL AND DAMAGED THE STARBOARD WING AND WING MOUNT. tcfirstfltday.jpg (181552 bytes) tcmaidenflt1.jpg (123552 bytes)

THE BONES OF THE WING COMPLETED.

THE STARBOARD WING PARTIALLY COVERED.  THIS WAS MY FIRST EXPERIENCE USING A FABRIC COVERING.  I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE WAY IT WENT ON AND THE WAY IT STRETCHES AROUND COMPOUND CURVES.
