Due to the limited manpower and facilities available to Kasr at Oremin, it became necessary to supplement his forces with droids. One of the results of this necessity is the TIE Kamikaze. The Kamikaze looks identical in appearance to the standard TIE/ln, but instead of a human pilot, a droid brain controls the fighter. The TIE/k as a fighter is merely average when it comes to dogfights against living pilots, but the true mission profile is as a guided missile.
Without the need to make room for a living pilot, Kasr was able to pack the TIE/k with high-yield explosives. One fighter contains enough explosive force to destroy ordinary fighters on impact and severely damage freighters and other smaller vessels. With the Kamikazes excellent maneuverability and advanced AI, it is smart enough and agile enough to avoid most capital-ship scale weapons making large groups of the TIE/k a serious threat to capital ships.
The high-yield explosives of the TIE/k coupled with the fragile hull also mean that it can be a threat to allied vessels as well, an explosion too close to another ship could have dire consequences. Because of this, Kasrs tactics dictate that the TIE/ks operate separately and alone from his living pilots. Although many times hell use his standard TIE Fighters to confuse enemy sensors and give the Kamikazes a better chance of hitting their target. |
