| On that fateful day in July of 2002, a North Texas downpour spilled from a dusky sky, causing Kandice Furr to scurry up the stairs that led to her third floor apartment. On the second floor landing, she let out a feminine shriek and nearly bumped into a descending John Hall. They stared at each other there for a moment before John extended a hand and a smile: "Hello there. I'm John." "Nice to meet you." She received his hand. "I'm Kandice." "Kandice . . . Kandice," he repeated, as if it were some kind of cipher or riddle. "Ah yes," he continued, "From the Biblical name for the Ethiopian Queen of Sheba---lover of King Solomon." "Impressive," she smiled. "Nice to meet you." "We'll see you around?" "I'm sure." Weeks passed before they met again, this time at the pool. They spent several hours chatting poolside, each learning about the other. Kandice worked full-time at Denton Regional Medical Center and studied full-time at the University of North Texas as a Biochemistry major. She was a very busy girl. John was taking an unfortunate break "between semesters" at UNT, while quickly becoming disillusioned with his place in the Starbucks Management Trainee program.
