Upright Bass Stand
The bass has been sitting on the floor for years now. It was finally time to make a stand for the old mule. The Upright Bass Stand is a work in progress. This is the first rendition of a wooden stand and we have a few more design ideas to through out there. One nice thing about this stand is that it works very well, is light and easy to use, and looks great. We used scrap poplar from the shop and some "home" harvested Big Leaf Maple. We enjoy using maple for strong parts even though it is a little difficult to work with.

The completed Upright Bass Stand. It looks a little spindly without the bass.
That's better! The stand hold the bass easily and securely. The stand was custom fit to this particular bass and bass player. Notice that the end pin is still extended. Just release the neck, grab the bass, and play.
The neck saddle was cut from one piece of 1" poplar, which is great wood to work with. Poplar is light and strong. The handle on the release was cut from maple and held to the bass stand with elk hide leather.
The bass rests easily in the saddle with very little pressure on the neck. The saddle is also lined with felt. We wouldn't want to scratch anything here.
The center piece is the heart of the stand holding everything together. It was carved from one block of Big Leaf Maple. The holding pins are simply dowel with hand spun (on the drill press) maple heads. The pins were then covered with felt and held to the stand with elk hide leather straps.
Just a little added embellishment for fun. A little maple bass decorates each leg of the stand.

If it wasn't good enough already, the upright bass stand folds up to a somewhat smaller size for transport, storage, or gift wrapping.

Future renditions will include different styling on the feet and legs, a folding mid-bass saddle option, and various wood options. Check back to see how we're coming along.
