2-10 Ported Bass Cabinet

We setout to make a fairly small upright bass cabinet for practices and small gigs that sounded great. Most commercially available cabinets were either too expensive, to big, or didn't sound all that great. Designing your own cabinets, or having someone else design a custom cabinet for you, gives you control over various design criteria including frequency response, frequency balance, overall tone, power handling, looks, and price.

The current trend with bass cabinets is to incorporate a horn tweeter/s and a passive crossover to the basic woofer design. We didn't feel that a horn tweeter was realy all that necessary for the playing style this cabinet was going to be used for. A simple design using two 10" drivers rated at 150W 8ohms each fitted into a ported enclosure would provide adequate frequency responce for our needs. There is a not that goes into building a good sounding bass cabinet. Many specifics can be found on the web and many more are printed in text books. We wont go into all the details here, but you could contact us for more specific information regarding this project. Below are several pictures of the 2-10 Ported Bass Cabinet. Hopefully we will have a recorded representation of this cabinet in the near future.

We didn't get any construction pictures of the cabinet until it was almost finished. The basic box is built from void free birch plywood. All the corner joints on the main box were jointed with finger joits and reenforced with 1" poplar bracing. The port was construced along the bottom edge of the cabinet and was tuned to give a very flat frequency responce. The cabinet was covered with inexpensive trunk carpet and fitted with rubber feet, plastic corner covers, and some nice spring loaded handles.
The back panel is held on with internal screws leaving a very clean look.
Finally, everything is together and the cabinet sounds great. The bass responce is fairly flat with a slight peak in the 100 hz range. This gives the cabinet a powerful bass tone which requires only a slight use of compression to limit runaway. Another interesting aspect of making and tuning cabinets is that the internal damping can be adjusted to impart the cabinet with a slight "woody" sound.
Here is the cabinet during a gig with Big Hands Colvin at The Upstage in Port Townsend, Washington. It sounds great in small and mid-sized rooms with a moderately active dancing crowd.
All of our woodworking projects are available for purchase. Most all of our projects are prototype one-of-a-kind creations build to fit our needs. Since we're a very small shop, we can customize any project to fit your requirements. If you like the woodworking you see on our web site, please feel free to contact us. We're interested in what you think. We also encourage Do-It-Yourselfers (DIY) to contact us with any questions or comments you may have regarding our projects.
