They stood in line just as they had that morning during rehearsal. This time was different. Soon theyd parade out in front of all their parents, because tonight they were graduating. They were never going to set foot in high school again. Kennedi Limon looked back three people to one of her best friends, Tara Maclayne. They smiled at each other and Tara quickly mouthed, We did it!
Kennedi grinned. Tara was right, they had done it. She turned to the front and her thoughts started going back, back almost seven months.

Okay, the scary music has officially started. And these applications are....in the mailbox! Madison Winters said, as she and her friends ceremoniously slipped their applications in the mailbox.
I cant believe were applying to colleges already. Kennedi said, wistfully.
I hope I get in to St. Catherines. I really want to go to college together with Ally. Tara said, reaching for her best friends hand as the group walked back down the sidewalk towards Siobhan Arinteros house.
I know you do, I hope so too. Alyson said, taking Taras hand and swinging it back and forth.

Kennedi smiled to herself, as she remembered. Alyson and Tara had both applied to The College of St. Catherines and Edina State University. Siobhan had applied to Edina State and a smaller one called Edgecumbe College. Madison had decided to leave the state and apply to the University of Wisconsin in both La Crosse and Green Bay. Kennedi herself had also decided to stick close, and had applied to Edina State and Edgecumbe College like Siobhan.
The music started up then, and Kennedi searched the very front of the line for Alyson and Siobhan. She found them just as Alyson stepped out from behind the curtain to proceed down the aisle. She locked eyes with Siobhan for a moment, and they smiled at each other, just before Siobhan got the signal to go. She waved at Kennedi, and stepped out, just two students behind Alyson.

Okay, everyone got their letters? On three; one....two....three! Madison said, and the girls opened their letters in a flash. No one spoke as everyone sat, just reading.
Siobhan looked up first, Well? she asked.
You go first. Kennedi said, with a little tremor in her voice.
Siobhan grinned hugely, I got into both! she squealed.
Yes! Madison screamed and hugged her friend, So did I!
What about you guys? Madison asked the other three, who were all very quiet.
I got into Edina State, but not Edgecumbe. I guess thats where Ill go. Kennedi stated quietly.
Where did you get in, Aly? Madison asked.
Not Edina State. But I did get into St. Kates. Alyson said, a little confused. St. Kates was harder to get into than Edina State.
Way to go, Aly, I knew youd get in! Kennedi squealed and hugged Alyson. Madison and Siobhan followed.
Tara just sat in her chair, her eyes filled with tears. If Aly didnt get into Edina State, but she got into St, Kates....that meant they wouldnt be going to the same college.
Tara? Alyson asked, noticing her friend hadnt joined the hug, Whats wrong? she took the papers from Taras hand and read them, the blood draining from her face, Oh, honey. Youll be with Kennedi and maybe even Siobhan. You wont be alone.
Its not the same! Tara wailed, I need you!
Alyson engulfed her friend into a long hug, I know honey, itll be okay. Well see each other a lot still, I promise.
But...youll meet new friends and probably forget all about me! Tara cried.
Alyson pulled away, and looked Tara in the eyes, Never. Honey, if theres one thing youve learned in the past 12 and a half years of being my friend, that would be that Ill always be your friend. No matter what. she smiled at Tara and wiped at the tears trailing down her friends cheeks.
And you have us, too, dont forget that. Ever. Siobhan chimed in.
