| The Limon living room was a mess. The Christmas tree was in the corner, half decorated by 13-year-old Kendra and a few of her friends. Their mom had told her to save half the tree for Kennedi and her friends, college girls now. The ornaments were all over the coffee table, and some even on the floor, as they had fallen when Kendra and her friends had been decorating.. Hey, how was the doctor? Kennedi asked Siobhan Arintero as she came in the door, bundled against the cold. She and Tara Maclayne were sitting on the couch in the living room, in view of the door. Siobhan sighed, Oh it was fine, just routine. What time do Madison and Alyson get here? she asked, taking off her coat, and plopping down next to her friends. Well, Ally wanted to stop by and see her family first, so she said shed be here by four, which is....in a half hour, and Madisons plane gets in....in three minutes actually, so she should be here by four-fifteen. Then we can decorate and catch up. Kennedi said. I cant wait! Its been weeks since weve seen Ally, and months since weve seen Madison, since she didnt come home for Thanksgiving. Tara said. I know, its been almost four months. I mean we talk on the phone and online, but.... Kennedi trailed off. Its just not the same. Siobhan finished. I am so glad were at the same college. I just dont think Id survive without someone I knew well there. Tara said, solemnly. Me neither. Thank you guys. Siobhan said, laying her head on Kennedis shoulder. Oh, youre welcome, honey. Kennedi said, softly, as she looked towards the door, almost willing the doorbell to ring. Somehow I didnt think finals could get any harder, but wham! They got harder! I am so glad theyre over! Tara said, sounding quite stressed out and tired. Honey, were in college now, of course theyre harder. Kennedi pointed out. I talked to Ally earlier this week and she sounded so stressed out. Her finals were Wednesday, yesterday, and she had one this morning before she left for winter break. Tara said, It really doesnt start for her until tomorrow, but shes coming home today anyway. Yeah. Were lucky, weve been off for three days. Siobhan said, her head still on Kennedis shoulder. Tara pulled her legs underneath her on the couch and leaned into Kennedi, looking up at the tree, Thats going to look so nice once were done. she remarked. It sure is. I made Kendra leave all my special ornaments, including the ones from you guys. Kennedi said. There were many Kennedi ornaments that shed either made as a child or gotten as gifts. When she got her own place, theyd go with her to start a new collection. Thats good. Can I put the sled up? Siobhan asked. Kennedi had gotten a sled ornament for her fifth Christmas, back in 1989, and for some reason Siobhan loved that ornament, with its little silver bells and fake holly and ivy decorating it. As long as I get Santa! Tara said, urgently. Tara had given Kennedi a Santa ornament last year, and had been the one to put it on the tree then, too. You can have Santa, I dont need Santa. Being Jewish and all. Siobhan said, grinning. Kennedi laughed, There you go. she said, smiling, even though her friends were facing the tree and couldnt see her. Im thinking of converting. Siobhan said, after a silence. To....? Kennedi asked. Wait, are you serious? Tara asked, sitting up. Siobhan sat up, too, Maybe, I dont know. I dont exactly go to synagogue anymore, and I dont fast or anything. she said. Yeah, but you celebrate Hanukkah. I dont go to church much at all either, and Im still Christian. Kennedi pointed out. Ditto. Tara said. True. Siobhan said, thoughtfully. Honey, was this a random thought or are you seriously thinking about it? Kennedi asked. Siobhan thought for a moment, It was mostly random. I thought about it a little last week during my math final, after I was done and had time to think. she answered finally. Well, give it a good thought. Its perfectly okay to be Jewish and still not go to synagogue very much. You do go on holidays, and I barely do that. Last Christmas I didnt go to church. Kennedi said Siobhan sighed, Yeah. Boy, Madison has it easy. Being an atheist and all. she said. Kennedi giggled, Yep. then she sighed, Oh hurry up guys! she said, looking at the front door. Patience, Kennedi, patience. Tara said, grinning. I cant be patient! It is now.....well okay its only 3:58 but... Kennedi was cut off by the doorbell. Back to the Homepage Onto Page Two |
