| Everything Shines came next and everyone sang along. We needed a slow one after this and got it.
San pulled the mic off the stand and I happily got ready for General Taylor. He has family in the DC area and he always does an over-the-top version of GT when hes here. Tonight was no exception. The notes were right on, flourishes intact, held for a long time. Very enjoyable. And Murrays harmonies were delicious. We had a pint of rum for every man and a pint of whiskey for (he caught Alans eye here and grinned devilishly) every girl here. Scolding Wife came next with Bob and Alan starting with the chorus first and then Alan with the first verse. Bob sang well and Alan came over but didnt blew in his ear or try to make him laugh. Kris, however, was another story. Although he seemed to avoid Bob and Sean tonight, he was wandering around the stage playing with Murray during his part and giving him a little kick in the pants. He fiddled with Alans thingy when he past him and then skirted around San (Alan bothered San during his verse) and Bob and came right over to the edge of the stage on Bobs side. His eye caught one of the kids in the second row and he offered his accordion to the little kid to play. The kid got shy and wouldnt come up to the stage but Kris was so cute. He always is with the kids. Alan was amused at the antics during Scolding Wife and made a comment that theres still a lot of room for this show to go off the rails this evening. The next bit I happily sat down for because I knew what it was from the chords Alan was playing the 80s songs sing-along. I havent a clue what went on in the 80s musically. I once took an 80s music quiz online and the score I got indicated that I must have been in a cave during the 80s. I was, sort of raising four kids ranging in age from 10 to newborn. Vic was even more clueless although we both were vaguely familiar with Video Killed the Radio Star from previous shows. They added one from the Eurhythmics that I recognized (Sweet Dreams) and another - Summer of 69, which Vic actually sang along with! He graduated from High School in 69 so I guess it holds some significance. There may have been another song in there too. Alan I think forgot the words for a minute and then found it humorous that most of the audience couldnt remember them either. When San held his whistle during the sing-along, I knew what was coming next Run, Runaway. It was particularly nice to see them all dancing their fool heads off. No one danced better than San however. That man is gracefully silly. And the second GBS song I learned on the fiddle was Run Runaway so it too holds a special place in my heart. They had a little break here while they all guzzled water and Alan introed Im A Rover. Thanks for having us. Its nice to be had! Alan was the devil here and when San sang She raised her arms up around her breast Alan stood behind him, wrapped his arms around him and moved them up to Sans breast at the appropriate time. Love the fiddle in this song too. I guess it was a fiddle night for me, although I love when Bob dances with the accordion. Here's a blurry photo of the 4 of them, snuck during Rover. |
| Helmethead came next with thanks for the upcoming hockey season. Alan asked how the baseball team was doing. (The Montreal Expos recently moved to Washington DC and are now the Washington Nationals.) People cheered and then Alan didnt score many points when he asked how the Red Sox were doing. Wrong area of the country, Alan! Bob was in fantastic voice this evening! I must say, it was the best Helmethead I have EVER hear, including the CD. I wish I had a recording of it. His voice was clear, right on key, not hoarse at all. It was a wonder. He just grinned all to pieces when the arm-raising portion of the chorus came up. I turned around to a glorious sight. Almost 6,000 people with arms raised high in the air, yelling Fare the well! I think this has been their biggest crowd here in the states, not counting festivals. Has to feel good. Bob looked thrilled to be singing and having the people react this way to one of his songs. His hair was beginning to curl up on the ends, it was so hot and humid. But he kept those shirt sleeves buttoned up! At least San had his unbuttoned and rolled up a bit. Maybe he uses this time instead of taking time in the sauna to lose weight. LOL! Vic snuck these photos during Helmethead. Blurry but you can see Kris's bald head and the fun Bob was having during Helmethead. |
