The more I hear Shines Right Thru and the more I think about why it was written, the more I like it. In an interview during the CD release weeks Alan had described the circumstances that spawned the song. It had been a long, hard 2003 long tours, three friends died of cancer, and Darrell left the band. They had gone off to their own corners of the world to lick their wounds and ponder the future of the band. After some weeks apart, they found they had all been writing songs and indeed, when they got together for a pint found comfort in each other and strength. Kalem assisted in the writing of this tribute to the love they have for each other, the strength they find in each other and the value of their friendship. I have not been very good at thanking Kalem for co-authoring it, even though I have made several trips to the merch table this tour. Well, Kalem, I am publicly thanking you here. I hope someone spreads the word to him for me.
Lukey was a sight to behold with everyone all over the stage. I tried to catch Alans rear-end waggle at the end but I was laughing too hard to focus. If he said Hello once, he said it 10 times tonight. After Lukey, Alan was shamelessly flaunting the new album. He said it would be up for Grammy Awards, European Music Awards and others. San called him over, whispered something and he went back to his mic and said, And Top Goalie Award for the Petty Harbour Rec League.
I zoned out during Something Beautiful. I closed my eyes and just enjoyed the words, harmonies, and whistle. I didnt want the song to end. There is something compelling about this song I can't explain. I don't sing to it, I just LISTEN and appreciate the sentiments and images it evokes. |
