Whoa! What a night! My feet are killing me. My knees are killing me. I guess I had more than just a good time. The City of Brotherly Love loves Great Big Sea! The line-up outside the venue should have been a good indication of the enthusiasm of the crowd. We have never had to worry about when to get there to line up. We do now. A busload of people blasted GBS from the bus for our enjoyment while waiting. I got there a half hour before the doors opened and the line was down almost to the end of the block. I dont think thats ever happened here before. Cool! Philly was in terrific voice as we got several choruses and verses in several songs to sing by ourselves as directed by Mr. Doyle throughout the evening. Lynda got a chance to relax as she informed me that she was passing the review to me tonight. Saw some old OKPers and some new OKPers. I hadnt seen Spinne and her sister for about 3 years. And there were a lot of new faces there tonight, good for GBS. It ended all too soon. Dont ask me what time they stopped because I lost my watch, but it was too short. That is a completely selfish statement. They sang for a long time, but it was still too short. You know what I mean. The Pushstars did not disappoint. This new album of theirs is MUCH better than the last one. I liked all the songs they played off it tonight. Chris seemed much more comfortable in front of this crowd, or maybe it was with his band to back him up. Last time I saw him, he was soloing in Buffalo, opening for GBS last summer. He seemed really nervous and uncomfortable. But that was not the Chris Trapper I saw this evening. Self-confident, he put his songs right out there and I think Philly ate them up. The band rocked and their time went fast.
It took a little while to set up the bys and we had little presents there for them cups that were souvenirs from a town with an unusual name not far from my house. One cup advertised I Brake for Intercourse, Pennsylvania. Another stated very simply I (heart) IntercoursePA. And the third just said, Intercourse, PA.. I had filled them with goodies. San and Bob got a Philly treat - Goldenbergs Peanut Chews, Alans contained a box of Gypsy Cold Care tea, Murray and Kris got McDonalds Kid Meal Soccer Lego guys. The cups also had little notes in them. I had made a folder of letters my kids in school wrote to GBS in school on Friday. We spent Friday morning in GBS mode Every wore one of my t-shirts, which was either a GBS shirt, a Newfoundland shirt or one Jim Fidler shirt. My student teacher wore my autographed OKP T-shirt and I wore the one that said, You can never have too much BOB. We took a picture and a few kids opted to wear the shirts for the rest of the day. We attached the picture to the folder so the bys could see my wonderful class in GBS mode.
The recorded Chafes Ceilidh music was a cool opener. I was so ready to see them bound out on that stage, believe me! The smoke machine would prove annoying all night, making it hard to focus the camera. The lights were also a big problem for photos. Well, they are making it very sporting without telling us not to photograph them. Nearly everyone with a camera was careful not to flash a lot though. So some messages are getting through. The anticipation in the audience was palpable when this shot was taken, waiting for the joyful noise to begin.
