GBS in Boston! Fleet Pavilion 2004

We left the hotel in New Haven and drove straight to the South Station in downtown Boston. We met up with Ilene and her hubby, Lynda, Michele, Endi and Dave. I think I am forgetting someone. Add to that mix me, Karen and Columbine. I think there was one other person there but I am not sure. Jean Marie would meet us later at the Fleet Pavilion. Columbine had brought yellow balloons that I blew up and Karen tied together. I kept singing in my head, "we are blowing up yellow smal balloons, yellow small balloons, yellow small balloons..." (old Beatles fan). When we got there we sat, talked and ate. The Cajun food place was good and we shared two meals from there.

After we were finished, we took the bus to the Fleet Pavilion and the first thing I noticed getting out of the bus was the delicious smell of the ocean. I LOVE that scent. I don't think I could function without the smell of the ocean several times a year. As it is now, I live in a landlocked State, but only 1 1/2 hours from the Jersey Shore. So 4 or 5 times a year, no matter what the season, I can be found standing on the beach or at a dock in the bay, or on the Boardwalk, breathing deeply the sea air. One reason why I love Cape Breton and Newfoundland so much I guess. Must have been an Island girl in a former life! The fact that I was going to be seeing Great Big Sea in a place where I could smell the great big sea was a bonus. The Pat McGee band opened to a small number of fans, maybe a couple hundred. They sounded much better in this venue than they had in the TLA in Philly. Their sound was meant for a bigger arena I guess. Pat described the Pavilion as "a gigantic popcorn machine" and he'd be about right - that's what it looked like. I enjoyed their set a little more than the other night. I think maybe this is like a Pushstars thing. I didn't like them the first two times I heard them but now I am a big fan. They presented themselves well and had their share of fans there - mostly sweet young things. This audience was not about singing though and Pat couldnt get anyone else but us in our section to sing. They announced they'd be doing a show in Copley Square on August 19th for those who were interested. Pat's Band actually gets mainstream radio play in Philly unlike GBS. I don't know about in Boston. After they cleared the stage I noticed Fran there in the middle section. I went over to say Hi and chichat for a while. We'll be seeing each other in Newfoundland again this year at the Folk Festival. Fran was taking picutres of GBS this evening. Her photos are always good. I hope we get to see them.
