GBS at the Avalon 2004
San introd Paddy Murphy as a song that tells an ugly story, not a beautiful one. Tonights version stated, The Pushstars got loaded drunk. And the part where every man was feeling gay? We must have sung that part 5-6 times. San kept starting over and wanted to hear the audience sing the gay line. But as usual, Alan and San assured us, It okay, were Canadian. We can feel that way. San was particularly dancey this evening and wandered back to the drum kit and banged on Kriss cymbals several times.

Shines Right Thru Me is fast becoming a favorite of mine and the raaaaiiiiiin line really makes the song for me. I am a sucker for 5-part harmony. After hearing the miniscule part on the CD, this live snippet really makes the song. I just wish they could sing it longer. That harmony is breathtaking.
Scolding Wife was funny with Alan bothering Bob, who turned as he sang and looked right at Alan and promptly stopped singing the words! He stared at Alan for a few seconds and turned back to the mic as if nothing had happened and went on singing. Alan was more than pleased that he had finally made Bob mess up. And we were treated to watching Murray, Alan and Kris standing behind San and blowing in his ear and doing other mischief. Alan and Kris worried Murray doing his verse but didnt quite do anything and everyone on that stage just had a very good time.

General Taylor was lovely. San, I think, likes it when everyone in the audience sings (even in harmony!) this one with him. He missed a note there and gave a sheepish look to Alan and shook his head, but got thru it in more than adequate fashion. Bobs mic was turned up loud and I really enjoyed his harmony as well as that low note from Murray. Chandra really enjoyed General Taylor. And commented at this point that this was a really fun show.

Run Runaway was great and San directed the audience like a conductor with his whistle. He seemed very happy this evening. Karen told me that was probably because his girlfriend was sitting right up there, offstage-Bob, smiling away. We had seen her the night before in NYC after the show while we were talking to Hugh from the Pushstars. She is gorgeous. Bob is still evolving his fiddle part for this. I can play it Bob-speed now the old way, but he keeps changing it. LOL! I think Ill stay with my current version.

The aftermath of Run Runaway was actually worth the admission.

After
Run Runaway, San began to introduce Chris Trapper. He started talking about writing songs for Sea of No Cares and was into the intro, when Alan gave him a strange look and made a comment to him about skipping ahead. Seems more than one person was not reading set lists this evening.

San says, Ooops, Im skipping ahead. Well, Ive been drinking all afternoon and I suppose thats the reason. All of a sudden he starts singing As long as the bottle was passed around and he stops and the audience picked it right up with every man was feeling gay!

In the meantime, Alans ear thingy wasnt working right and he finally took it out as San was talking and Danny came out to see what the problem was. While Danny is trying to figure what is wrong, San says to Alan, Go ahead, sing something in French, Alan.  So, to my surprise,  we got treated to a French song a capella, I think all the verses even! Sure wish I KNEW French so I could tell you what it was about. It so caught me by surprise that I forgot to look at the others to see what their reactions were.

I had just explained to Chandra how last night in New York City was different because Alan didnt break any strings. I told her that almost every show I went to, Alan broke a guitar string at least once. As soon as he strapped on the electric guitar and did the preliminary chords for Sally Ann, he broke a string. Boy, did I laugh! I think its hard to break stings on an electric guitar!!!! Danny quickly brought out the acoustic and they went on with
Sally Ann.
