Music Rob O'Connor Just as Southern California is known for its endless sunny days, its now also known for its endless supply of broken-hearted boys who turn that heartbreak into tightly constructed pop songs with just enough guitar crunch to slip them onto the Warped Tour and justify the reckless overhair and roadworn jeans. We call them emo bands and they are destined to take over the earth, global warning or not. Sure, Halifax want you to think theyre tough (If Im the cure and shes the disease, do what you will they offer on Nightmare, the albums opening cut), but these youngsters are gentlemen. They are not loners; they harmonize well and play as a team. Guitarists Adam Charles and Chris Brandt create a seamless wall of sonic cream. Sure, the guitars opening Promise Me Tragedy sport hard rock sideburns, but this band writes clean cut choruses that are pure pop ambition. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday July 1, 2006-Carson Daily Our friends at 1iota.com are looking for die hard HALIFAX fans to be part of their mini-concert on Last Call with Carson Daly Wednesday, July 12th. Our yahoo group can be found here. Another group can be found here. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sunday June 26, 2005-Interview To the casual observer, Halifax looks and sounds like any other scenester band. Lyrics about relationships are layered over loud, distorted guitars; the band members sport studded belts and jet black hair and loyally update their MySpace blogs. But when Sound the Sirens caught up with guitarist Chris Brandt we realized a key component of the emo stereotype was missing. Interestingly, what makes Halifax stand out right now is the fact that the band doesnt take itself too seriously. Halifax doesnt have grand ambitions of epic albums and radio takeovers. Halifax doesnt aspire to make the next Joshua Tree. These five hell-raising twenty-somethings just want to play music, get wasted and light firecrackers in their van. I don't look at our music like we are something completely new and innovative, said Brandt. We just play to have fun! This strategy seems to be working for Brandt and his bandmates. Their latest release on Drive-Thru Records sold nearly 7,000 copies in its first week with little attention from the mainstream media. The band has toured with the Vans Warped Tour and Hawthorne Heights and their video for Our Revolution is in heavy rotation at Fuse. Halifax has also developed a large, devoted fanbase overseas. Foreign fans go more crazy for us then most of our fans in the states! said Brandt. I don't think we ever thought we would be able to sell out a show in a different country. With the release of Halifaxs latest album, the band continues to evolve and grow. The Inevitability of a Strange World is a departure from their debut EP, 2005s A Writers Reference, relying more on pure rock and personal experiences than its predecessor. We had been touring and I felt like I experienced more than when I was trying to write for A Writers Reference, just roaming around the So-Cal area, said Brandt. We have grown a lot since writing A Writers Reference and we had more time to work out the songs for the new album. The sound has evolved into more of a rock sound. Yet, despite landing at number one on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, Halifax is still best known for its infamous appearance on The Real World: Austin. Its alcohol-fueled cameo at the South by Southwest festival was pure TV-14 rock n roll debauchery shocking in a music scene where many bands are more interested in kickball games and BBQs than liquor and girls. We had a great time filming the show, then when it aired there was a lot of drama and problems, admitted Brandt. We kind of expected that, but we had fun and they got us drunk and put a camera in our face for the world to see. Brandt doesnt even hint at regret over Halifaxs notorious television debut. He insists that being on the show helped the band by exposing them to an MTV crowd that wouldnt have heard of them otherwise. If you like us, thats cool and if you don't, that's fine, too, said Brandt. Music is an art and you are going to have people that hate it and people that love it. We just want to play the music we like and have fun with it. -From Sound The Sirens Magazine By: Ashley Rigazio --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday June, 23-Who's Next Halifax has been nominated for Yahoo's "Who Next". You can download this song in the audio section. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday May, 20-Review HALIFAX - The Inevitability Of A Strange World On May 23rd, a giant sigh of relief will be released from both Drive-Thru Records and Halifax. After months of push backs, distro issues, doubts, and hard work, Halifax will have finally released their highly delayed and anticipated debut album, The Inevitability Of A Strange World, and Drive Thru Records will have released their first record in nearly 7 and a half months. And after many listens, this album is worth the wait. Produced by Lou Giordano (Taking Back Sunday) and Machine (Every Time I Die, Boys Night Out) at separate stages of the album, Inevitability is a 13-track punch in the face, mixing punk, metal, and rock with a lot of hooks, passion, and intensity, making this Strange World a place worth visiting. The album begins with the riff-heavy anthem, "Nightmare." Guitarists Chris Brandt and Adam Charles duel back and forth, while drummer Tommy Guindon keeps up the beat. Following that is the first single and Motley Crue-influenced, "Our Revolution." While it's not the best song on the album, it's fun as hell to shout along with the uproarious chorus with lines like "Rock and roll is dead/the dead will come undead!", and the riff in the breakdown will certainly bring back the ghosts of past rock and roll bands. "Anthem For Tonight" is reminiscent of similar band's work, but only Halifax does it better, as Mike Hunau's voice is full of urgency as the guitars race throughout the track. "Snow In Hollywood" is a mid-tempo rocker about a coke binge gone awfully wrong, while "Such A Terrible Trend" slows it down a bit as the guitars soar and the steady pace from bassist Doug Peyton. While this song isn't all that bad, Halifax is at their best when they are rocking out, and this song comes off as really average. The album picks back up with "Better Than Sex", which begins with soothing "ahh's" that lead into a thunderous intro that doesn't let up at all. "Promise Me Tragedy" is a snarling track raging at the seams. The chorus is hooky and the musicianship is top-notch here. The album loses some luster with the ballad, "A Tint Of Rain." It sounds very out of place on an album like this and kinda feels like a filler track. Thankfully, the album finishes on a high note with the closer, "Murder I Wrote." Easily my favorite song on the album, it starts with a gentle guitar riff, which delivers into a bruising duel-guitar riff and nice drumming. This track balances between slow and fast well, even incorporating some strings in the end of this track, bringing the album to a climatic end. While this album isn't without flaws and some filler, the majority of the songs make up for it with their heavy guitar play, lively rhythm, and earnest vocals. The Inevitability Of A Strange World is the perfect summer album, one that you can blast in your car while going at speeds of 80 MPH and singing at the top of your lungs. For those who gave up on Halifax and the Drive-Thru label, I ask of you to please give this an album as shot, as I am sure it'll surprise you like it surprised me. This release has restored a lot of my faith back into the label, as well as making me excited about Halifax's future, as it appears very bright. On May 23rd, join Halifax and Drive-Thru in that sigh of relief, as you?ll be glad that the label is back to its normal business, releasing very good and energetic albums that'll put a smile on our face and fun into our lives, just like the good old days.
