RESEARCH: It as been the genearlly received opinion that this
family, one of the oldest, most substantial and honorable in
New Engalnd, descended from one Richard, lord of the baronial
demesne of Baguley, who lived during the reign of Henry III.,
about the middle of the thirteenth century. It was based
chiefly upon the suppostion that John Bigelow of Watertown, the
immigrant ancestor of most or all of thsoe bearingthe name
nthis part of the country, was identical with a certain John
Beagely, a repoutd scion of the ancient hous of Baguley, who,
according to the parish records, wa born in wrentham, Suffolk,
England 16 Feb 1616/1617. More recent inquiries, however,
prosecuted with painstaking diligence and care, have not only
failed to establish the identity referred to, but have rendered
the whole theory undernotice so uncertain, not to say
improbable, that some of those most interested in the matter
have abandoned it altogether. It has, indeed been found
impossible to race the American family to its ancestralhome and
hereditary relationships beyond the sea. Not even the name
Bigelow, nor any one akin to it, so far as ascertained at the
present date, appears in the historical literature or
patronymic vocabularies of the old world. As an illustration
of the orthographical versatility of those days, in respect to
family nams as wellas otherwise, it may be noted that this
man's name was spelled Biguloh in the record of his marriage;
Biggalough when he took the oath of fidelity in 1652; Bigolo
whenmade freeman in 1669; while in his will it was reduced to
its simplest form Biglo. There is reason for the belief that
John Bigelow was in this countryat least several years before
his marriage, and while it is supposed that he had no brothers
in the country at that time the recor of the marriage of one
Elizabeth Bigelow with Deacon Richard Butler of Hartford has
sed to the conclusion that she probably was a sister of John
Bigelow. 2

BIOGRAPHY: The first mention of his name on the recrods is
found at Watertown, MA, where 30 Sep 1642 he married Mary
Warren. In 1652 he took the oath of fidelity there, and 17 Apr
1690, he was admitted freeman. He was a blacksmith my trade
and ws allowed certain timber by the town for the building of
his forge. He was a highway surveyor in 1652-1660; constable
in 1663; and selectman in 1665/70//71. His homestead consisted
of six acres. 2

The immigrant ancestor of nearly all persons in North America bearing
the surname Bigelow in any of its several variants, is John Biglo of
Watertown, Massachusetts. He lived from 1617 to 1703. Many of his
descendants have been recorded in a genealogy entitled The Bigelow
Family in America, written by Gilman Bigelow Howe, printed 1890. The
book was published by Charles Hamilton of Boston, and is no longer
availableexcept by photo-copy reprint. Rebound used copies
occasionally come into the used-book market with the simple title
Bigelow Genealogy. In this book Howe states that he was unable to
obtain any satisfactory account of the progenitor of John Biglo, and
quotes conflicting traditions stating that the surname is ofvarious
national origins. He also quotes the late genealogist H.G. Somerby,
who felt that John Biglo came from Wrentham, Suffolk, England, and was
son of Randall and Jane Beageley, who had their youngest son, John,
baptized 16 February 1617. Also, from the probate records of Wrentham,
Somerby quotes the will of a Francis Baguley, blacksmith, of Wrentham,
who in a will dated 20 October 1656, granted five pounds "to his
brother John Baguley, now living in New England, if he comes for it
within two years". He offered no proof that Francis was son of Randall
