Haldir
Name means: Tall Watcher (from Quenya. halla - tall, dir - watch).
Position: March Warden of Lothlorien
Haldir played by the lovely Craig Parker.
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (chapter Lothlorien).
When we first meet Haldir, it is when Legolas and Frodo climb up the flet (platform) to meet with the Elves of Lothlorien.  Haldir was the first to bid them a welcome.  He was dressed in a shadowy grey (as his kin were).  Haldir also knew the Comman Language because he traveled outside of Lorien to gather news and watch for enemies.  His brothers Rumil and Orophin knew little of other languages.  Haldir (as well as Elves in general) did not care for Dwaves.  He told Legolas that Gimli could only go through Lorien if he was blindfolded.

To cross the river Celebrant, Haldir and another Elf tied a rope to two trees,  Then he was able to run lightly across it to the otherside.  When Haldir and the Fellowship entered the Naith of Lorien, Gimli's eyes were to be blindfolded, in fear of him being a spy.  Gimli didn't like that idea and threatened the Elves by laying a hand on the haft of his axe.  Haldir and his companions bent their bows back at the Dwarf.  In the end all of the Fellowship was to be blindfolded (Aragorn's idea).  Haldir was the guide to the blindfolded Fellowship, leading them on all the straight and smooth paths of Lorien.  Haldir had a great love of Lothlorien and the great mallorn trees that grew in it.

When a great host of Elves came marching up they stopped and spoke to Haldir, telling him that the Lord and Lady said that the Fellowship could walk freely.  Haldir removed the blindfold from Gimli's eyes first, bowing and apologized to him.  He then led them to Cerin Amroth (the heart of the ancient realm) and asked if Frodo wanted to climb up the Cerin Amroth with him.  Haldir told the Fellowship about Southern Mirkwood and how Dol Guldor, where the enemy had his dwelling at one time may be inhabited again.  Haldir finally led the Fellowship to Caras Galadhon and his part ends.
Movie Haldir (Fellowship of the Ring)
We first see Haldir when the Fellowship arrives in Lothlorien.  He has a great line here "The Dwarf breaths so loud we could have shot him in the dark'  Though in the book this comment was directed at Sam and said by Legolas.  Changing it to Gimli was funny, because of what Gimli had just said prior to that.  Movie Haldir is a bit more arrogant -which I like- He seems to be a bit more cocky with a 'I don't care' attitude.  In the theatrical version of FOTR his part was very brief but Craig Parker's portrayal of the March Warden was excellent.
Movie Haldir (Fellowship of the Ring- Extended Edition)
Haldir had his scene expanded a bit more in the Extended DVD version of FOTR.  After the Fellowship entered Lothlorien and were surrounded by the Galadhrim archers, it cuts to a night scene on a 'talan' or 'flet' (a platform built in the trees).  Haldir welcomes Legolas and Aragorn in Elvish.  Gimli gets mad because he can't understand what Haldir is saying.  Haldir goes into his speech about not having dealings with the Dwarves since the Dark Days.  Gimli swears at Haldir in Dwarvish.  This is the only point where Haldir seems to be a bit offended by the look on his face.  He quickly gets over it though and looks to Frodo saying that he has brought great evil with him.  He then looks at Aragorn and says that they can go no further into Lothlorien.  At this point we see Haldir and Aragorn arguing in Elvish (though we can't hear what they are saying to each other).  In the end Haldir finally allows them to continue on.  Haldir's last major part is at the edge of the borders looking at Caras Galadhon.  In a sing-songy voice he says 'Caras Gladhon heart of Elvendom on earth.  Home of the Lord Celeborn and Galadriel, Lady of light.'

Haldir has no more speaking parts but he is present while Celeborn and Galadriel speak to the Fellowship.  He also is at the gift giving scene (he gives Legolas the Elven leaf pin and a kiss on the forehead).
Movie Haldir (LOTR: The Two Towers)
I was not expecting this to happen, but it did and it was great.  Haldir appears in the second film leading a troop of Elves to Helm's Deep (this does not happen in the book).  Dressed in golden armor and a lovely red cape (and what struck me as odd, was he was the only Elf without a helmet, which would have helped him later on).  He speaks to King Theoden saying that he brings help from Lord Elrond.  Aragorn runs down the stairs to greet Haldir and gives him a hug (which is very cute IMHO).  Haldir looks a bit shocked at first and slightly returns the hug and gives the cutest smile (I'm a girl I notice these things).

As the battle for Helm's Deep starts we don't see much of Haldir until Aragorn spots him and yells for him to get his Elven warriors into the Hornburg.  Haldir nods and begins to yell for his men.  Then the most horrible thing happens, an Uruk Hai kills comes up behind Haldir and kills him (this was a very sad part but it needed to be done.  I think it added a lot of emotion at Helm's Deep since we see a character that we knew from the books and the first movie die).  As Haldir is dying, he sees is fallen kin and for a moment the look on his face is of shock, terror, and sadness.  For me this added to my emotions, since Elves are not supposed to die unless by grief or in battle.  Aragorn rushes to Haldir's aid and lays a hand on the Elf's chest, but Haldir has passed on.

A very touching scene.  I do hope his part will be expanded in the Extended Edition of the TTT.
