The Waimakariri river is situated just north of Christchurch, the garden city.
Christchurch is located in the Province of Canterbury.
Canterbury is situated on the mid east coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
The river originates high in the Southern Alps and for the majority
of its length is intricately braided across a wide floodpan.
The Waimak is a river of great variety in its moods.
One day crystal blue, another deepest bronze green.
In places violent and pent with fury.
In the lower and mid reaches embraced by both deep and shallow slow backwaters.
Fed by an abundance of tributaries in its journey to the ocean.
The river is home to a vast variety of fishes and in the lower reaches marine life.
The Waimakariri finally spills into the South Pacific Ocean at Pegasus Bay.

Here are some Images of the river.
Some I have collected online, I thank the photographers and the webmasters.
Others I photographed myself.
Please be patient as some of these Images are LARGE!
Especially large is the wide panoramic shot of the Arthurs Pass Region.
Here is an overhead shot of a typical sweeping bend in the middle reaches of the Waimak.
Here is a map of North Canterbury showing the location of various rivers.
The Waimakariri is there, you just need to look hard ;-)
See the lump that sticks out from the east coast, the Waimak is just north of that.
Here is a wide angle shot showing an unusual colouring of the water.
This amazing panoramic shot shows the Waimakariri and one of it's tributaries in the high valley of Arthurs Pass which is well up into the Southern Alps yet still far from the headwaters of this awesome river.
If you haven't done it already please scroll this one all the way to the right,
the link printed there is well worth a visit if you are into photography.
