BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF
DR. FRANTZ LARGE
Dr. Georges Frantz Large was born in 1957 in Pétion-ville, Haiti, where he completed his studies in medicine at the Université d'Etat d'Haïti. Concomitant to his medical studies, Dr. Large pursued an avocational track as an art historian and critic, studying for four years with Professor Philippe Lerebours at the Institut français d'Haïti, and supplementing this period with coursework in esthetics and art history at New York University.Dr. Large was a newspaper columnist for Le Nouvelliste, a host for artistic programs on Télévision Nationale d'Haïti featuring Philomé Obin, Rigaud Benoît, Enguerrand Gourgues, André Pierre, etc… He also published Le Courrier, a monthly cultural magazine, as well as the politico-cultural Le Combat, publication of which was interrupted in 1993.
Dr. Large's professional links are extensive. He remains on the faculty of the Ecole Nationale des Arts, is presently involved with the Association internationale des Critiques d'Art, serves as vice-president of Association haïtienne pour la recherche en Archéologie, en Esthétique et Histoire de l'Art, and is the author of numerous articles and monographs. He was also awarded the prestigious Journalist of the Year in 1986 by the Paris-based Centre pour la Formation Professionnelle des Journalistes. Dr. Large is also vice-president of the Haitian Medical Association and president of the Commission of Health and Social affairs of the Lion's Club of Port-au-Prince.
