| When clef moved to East Orange N.J, in his mid teen. clef started performing with his cousins as the rap group Tranzlater Crew. It was later called Fugees, after they hooked up with Lauryn Hill. The group landed a record deal with Ruffhouse/Columbia in 1991. The fugees' debut CD, Bluted on Reality, sold poorly but earned considerable acclaim from critics. The next alblum, The Score made the most commercially successful rap album of all atime. On the heel of the sucees of The Score, Jean went on to produce hits for other artists, such as Destiny's Child, Whitney Houston, Mary J Blige, and Canibus.
While on a world tour with Fuggees in 1996, Jean went into studios in Haiti, Paris, and, NY to record track for a solo CD, which was released in July of 1997. The Carnival offer a mix of hip- hop, folk, raggae, and caribbean music sung alternately in English Spanish, French, and creole. The Carnival gave Wycelf Jean's reputation as both cuuting edge artist and a collabotator with a Midas touch. In the aftermath of Carnival's success, he established The Wyclef Jean Foundation, a non profit organization that promotes social programs and help poor communities around the world. There of alot of speculation regarding the status of the Fugees. |
