After Baby Doc exile, Haiti was left under military rule with mass massacres and rigged elections. Power went back and forth from one leader to the next without any positive results for the people.
In 1990, Jean Betrand Aristide, a roman catholic priest from the slums of Port-Au- Prince was elected president. He was seen as the first leader of the people since 1804. In 1991, Aristide presidency was ended by a military coup and he exile in the United States. Haiti suffered from a strict embargo causing great economic hardship. Many Haitians attempted to flee to the United States by boat only to suffer death and relocation to camps at Guantanomo, and Cuba. Finally, Aristide was restored to office in 1994, and Rene Preval became his successor in Feb, 1996 elections. U. S soldiers left in 2000, but unemployment is at 50%, and people are struggling with poverty. Haiti has turned into a major drug shipment point between Colombia and the U.S. Haiti's government is paralyzed. November 2000, Aristide was easily elected president in elections that both parties boycotted and many people called dishonest. The election was considered a faud. The U.S and many other countries have threatened Haiti, because it has become the world's poorest countries. The future of Haiti depends on the ability of its leaders to be honest, and discover a solutions to Haiti's problems. |
