The Chinese Crested is a lovable little clown that loves to be loved and their unique appearance tends to attract attention wherever they go. The Crested is an AKC recognized "Toy" breed. Their height is ideally 11' - 13" and they come in two distinct coat varieties; the hairless and the powderpuff. Either variety can be born in the same litter and contrary to popular rumor, the powderpuff does not serve as a hot water bottle for the hairless.
The hairless variety has soft supple skin with long silky hair on the head, feet and tail. Reasonable care must be taken with the skin of the hairless. Lighter colored dogs can sunburn and some young dogs can go through a 'teenage acne' stage of life. The hairless variety will often have primitive teeth that are not well 'rooted'. Additionally, the hairless can also have varying degrees of body hair that most owners will clean up. While the hairless are hardy, a sweater is recommended for cool weather. Some hairless dogs can also be sensitive to products containing lanolin or wool.
The powderpuff variety is completely covered with long silky hair. The texture of the coat can vary from puppy to adult. Routine brushing and bathing will help maintain a matte-free coat. It is permissible to shave the face and ears of both varieties.
Since they are a "Toy" breed, care must be taken around young, rough or pre-school children. They can do well with children if properly introduced and the child knows to respect the dog's feelings. They love to run and play, so a fenced yard is recommended. The Chinese Crested is a sweet, intelligent breed that thrives on love and attention. Today you will find both varieties in the conformation show ring, obedience ring, agility and other competitions. |
