Things about this episode that I consider interesting:
- The Cigarette Smoking Man is present. He outranks ANY OTHER RECURRING CHARACTER, even Deep Throat, as far as being-from-the-beginning is concerned. How anyone could consider CSM to be less important than Skinner, Krycek, X, or any other later-appearing character is beyond me. I mean, he's a representation, which is obvious not only from his presence here but from his near-identical appearance at the very end of The Erlenmeyer Flask.
- Neither Mulder nor Scully look particularly "good." I mean, granted I think they look good, but Scully's hair isnt "cute", Mulder isnt wearing any makeup (THANK GOD!!) and they both wear glasses at some point. (I think... I KNOW Mulder does, but I think Scully too.)
- The effects are cheesy and the film a little grainy. MUCH preferred, if you ask me, but if you compare this with, say, I dont know, that episode from the sixth season with that big monster thing... the effects were cheesy there too (for a worse reason ;) ) but the film was almost SHINY. In fact, the effects here arent so much cheesy as understated.
- The alien activity represented here, while seemingly government-directed, doesnt seem to follow any kind of bee-using, Samantha-cloning, virus-injecting pattern as it tended to later. It was MERELY a cover-up.
Jessica is now nostalgic and sad. Aww....
