REPRESENTATIVE R. L. HAINS PUT SALINE COUNTY "ON MAP" FOR HARD ROADS

Saline County citizens and especially those of East Saline can never repay Rep. R. L. Hains for his efforts in behalf of roads at the recent session of the legislature and in bringing "home the bacon" for people of this community. And what is true of Saline County, for with the missing link from Glasgow west, their road would end in the river.

Long before the special session of the legislature which was to deal with the road question convened, it became evident that the tentative plans drawn by the present state highway commission would in all probability be taken as a basis for the road system. In this plan each county was not to have more than 50 miles of roads and in the plan there was no provision made for the road from Glasgow via Slater and Gilliam.

This did not look good to East Saline people and a committee appeared before the commission in protest. The commission heard the plea but took no action. A short time before the legislature adjourned the commission put their finale on their recommendations to the legislature and wrote in their minutes the Saline County system, leaving the gap between Glasgow and Marshall out.

Here is where Mr. Hains again got busy and the results are an evidence of his power and influence as a member of the legislature. In company with the chairman of the road committee of the House, Mr. Bailey, he went before the commission and asked if their ruling was final. They were curtly told that it was.

Mr. Hains told them he proposed to make a fight on the floor of the House to the last ditch. The road chairman then told the commission they were making a mistake, that with Mr. Hains' influence for the road bill it could be put over, with him against, it would be lost. The commission reconsidered and wrote the missing link.
