Obituary from the Slater News Rustler of Friday, June 17, 1938.
Mrs. John C. Hains, wife of Postmaster John C. Hains, passed away at the family home in Slater at 5:30 o'clock, Tuesday afternoon, June 14, 1938, at the age of 72 years 2 months and 8 days. Mrs. Hains had been in failing health for the past two years or more, suffering from a complication of ailments, but it was only a few days prior to her death that her condition became critical.
Mrs. Hains, whose maiden name was Roxie Ann Jones, was born in Scotland county, Mo., April 6, 1866. She was united in marriage to John C. Hains, December 24, 1890, by the Rev. George W. Norvell, pastor of the Baptist Church of Gilliam, and shortly following their marriage the couple moved to a farm near Mulhall, Oklahoma, where they made their home until 1895, following which they returned to Saline county where the family had since made their home.
Three children were born to the union, Lamar F., Vilas H., and Leola L., the latter passing away in March 1921. She is survived by the husband and two sons, and four grand-children,---,------,------,------, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
When but a girl in her teens, Mrs. Hains united with the Good Hope Baptist Church, and later affiliated with the First Baptist church of Slater, and was ever a faithful and devoted member and active in the church so long as her health permitted.
The funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church this Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and will be conducted by Dr. F. O. Criminger. Burial will be made in the Slater City Cemetery.
The Slater Community Club has requested that all of the business establishments of the city, close during the hour of the funeral service, which will be from 2:30 to 3:30 this afternoon, Thursday.
