The following was written by the daughters for the 1983 edition of the "History of Saline County, Missouri"
In 1925, our parents, with three children still at home, moved to the city of Slater. There, our father deliverd groceries for the "Hains and Gauldin Grocery and Dry Goods Store". He later worked for his brother of Marshall, who was the owner of "The Daily Democrat News".
In 1936, our father and mother returned to the farm they still owned, but in a few years, they sold it and built a home on land adjoining the location of his parents' home and where they lived in their later years.
During their early years, the family attended the Good Hope Baptist Church, one of the oldest churches in the community. Its one hundredth anniversary was celebrated August, 1918. It was disbanded inthe early 1940's. Occasionally we attended the New Prospect Baptist Church where our mother's family were faithful attendants. This church still has worship services.
Our father was a long time member of the Modern Woodmen of American, receiving a fifty year membership pin in 1950.
In retrospect, some occasions that our family enjoyed were family reunions, Modern Woodmen picnics, and State Fairs.
Our mother passed away January 23, 1949, and our father, August 24, 1966.
Through the years of our parents' lives, all the children lived within a few miles from them."
"In the early years of their marriage, our parents lived on several farms in the Gilliam and Slater areas. In 1914 they moved to a farm they had purchased five miles north of Slater. Our father continued in general farming. He was interested in the raising of livestock and often times entered colts in fall festivals in nearby towns to be judged and did receive quite a few ribbons.
