In the Far Depths of the Sky de Klara Losonczy

She was alone in the same old tower, surrounded by the same frightening silence. A silence she wished so much to break through. In her tormented mind, this unbreakable silence was worse than death, perhaps like Hell. No, this couldn’t go on! She had to do something or she’ll kill herself. Without thinking, she took a plate from a little table behind her and hurled it towards the small window with iron bars. The porcelain plate splintered with great noise, also breaking the glass of the window, glass which fell down, almost like flying from the top of the tower on the rocky plain which was surrounding the solitary tower.

Hearing the awful scream of the marble pieces of glass splitting all over, she startled. Yes, it was much better, but now, the cold and salty sea winds were whispering all over her room. Shivering from her entire body, she twisted towards the door, but something shone behind her. She turned back immediately and she saw a tall man looking at her from the window. He was smiling almost demonically, his teeth gleaming mysteriously. She shouted sharply, breaking once more that frightening silence. But now she was even more scared.

"Who are you? Why are you threatening me?" she screamed, running on the opposite corner of the room.

"I’m the answer to your prayers!" he whispered, with a grin which -she thought- wasn’t foretelling anything good.

"What do you know about my prayers? You’re a demon!" and her big green eyes were injected with thrill.

"I know you want to die. I will accomplish your wish!" and he started waking towards her.

"How can you know that? You couldn’t have heard it, as I have never told it to anyone! And to who could’ve I said it? Nobody cares about me!"

"You’re right, but I’m not a man. I have never heard your voice saying you want to die rather than living here, kept away from the whole world and considered mad by the ones you love. But I did hear your thoughts screaming for help and death! Your prayers have been listened. Do not fear! Your sufferance will soon be ended!" the stranger said, with a kind smile on his face.

She was amazed and horrified. Who was he? He couldn’t be a man. He was too unreal!.. Was he a demon? No! He was too handsome and rays of light were surrounding his head. Then who? An angel? No, how could an angel visit her? She was cursed. She had no hope… but death. Was he death, who came to take her?.. One flash look into his deep, inhuman eyes and she finally understood. The tension, the fear, the uncertainty disappeared: he was the one she was expecting for such a long time.

"Hope in eternal life is the only thing they can’t take away from you!" she finally whispered softly, before she flew away, in the far depths of the sky…
