A FUZZY APPROACH FOR THE SELECTION OF POWER TRANSMISSION SYSTEMS IN THE PRELIMINARY DESIGN STAGE

T. A. OSMAN1, AND H. A. HEGAZI2

ABSTRACT

The preliminary design stage is an important part in the design process. This early machine and systems design stage constitutes a high level of vagueness and imprecision. Due to the lack of complete information, uncertainty, and imprecision for system selection, a technique to perform design calculations on imprecise representations of parameters is presented . This technique is based on fuzzy logic using fuzzy sets. Design alternatives are expressed in terms of fuzzy orders of magnitude. Calculations based on fuzzy weighted average is performed to produce the ratings among design alternatives. Membership functions for the alternative ratings are presented for the comparison. This method provides a tool for design automation at a higher abstract level, for the selection of the proper power transmission system. A manner similar to human language is accommodated to demonstrate the capability of the proposed method. The selected attribute can be considered later in the CAD process.
