Article written by: Management [email protected] Really, what’s the difference? First off, I’m going to explain the car we are dealing with. It’s a little car that was available from 1984 to 1987 from Toyota that’s called a Corolla here in the U.S. You’ve probably heard of other names such as: “AE86, Hachi Roku, Hatchi or Trueno, and maybe Levin,” I’ll explain these as we go. This car was available in both a 3-door lift back/hatchback and 2-door coupe/notchback. Talking nickname, as mentioned above, this car has many. The most popular, I think is “AE86.” This is the body code for the J. spec GTS equivalent, the GT-Apex. Here in the U.S., “AE86” is the body code for a SR5 models, and “AE88” is the body code for GTS ones. Another form of this is “AE85” which is the J. spec equivalent to a SR5 model in the U.S. “Hachi Roku,” which translates to “8 and 6” in Japanese is derived from the body code “AE86.” “Hatchi” is the combination of the two words hachi and hatch. Because the hatchback model of this car is the more popular of the two (I suppose from both Initial D and drifting videos) someone combined these two words, and that was that. Of course, you should know that using the term “Hatchi” can irritate some Corolla enthusiasts for some untold reason, so be careful how you use it. Now on to “Trueno and Levin.” In Japan, their version of these Corollas were called these names which I’m told stands for “thunder and lightning.” Trueno, is the version of the car that has hidden headlights, while a Levin has fixed ones. Good deal? Now to the actual article, that I think more than half of you came to read. This is just some of the basic information; so don’t be too surprised if you didn’t learn anything. SR5, GTS, and GTSR are the names of the original trim models that were available from Toyota for this type of Corolla. The SR5 (I’m told it’s either Sport Rally 5, or Speed Runabout 5) was the economic model of the three. The car came with a SOHC 1.6L 4A-C carbureted engine. The SR5 was available with either a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The GTS (Grand Touring Sport) trim is the car that everyone talks about. This car had a DOHC 1.6L 4A-GE EFI engine that has 16 valves. The only transmission available was a 5-speed manual known as T50. This car contained all kinds of features standard, such as two-tone interior, power-mirrors (except 1987), and many other cosmetic things. The GTSR (Grand Touring Sport Racing) is the highest of all the three. Only about three hundred originals were manufactured in only 1986. This car was pretty much the same as the GTS, except it contained a different head on the 4A block that has 16 valves, but different actual ports. The car also contained different looking seats, that I think are available stock in kouki J. spec GT-Apex cars. I haven’t done much research about this trim model, because there aren’t many of these cars available.Detect any errors? Let us know at [email protected]
