What is a browser?

A browser is what you see web pages on, such as Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicator. You are viewing this web site through a browser. A browser also changes what it sees, the html tags, into what you see, which is a web site. Different browsers interpret the tags differently, which is why some tags that work on Internet Explorer will not work on Netscape Communicator. Your browser asks the web server to send you the information of the web site you are looking for, and that is what you see on your screen.

How does a web page/site work?

You make your web site out of html tags, most of the time. The browser then takes those tags and changes them into what you and other people see on the screen. The workings of a web site are as simple as that. You can also add special effects to your page using javascript, flash, and CSS. I will be teaching you all of those on this web site.

What do I need to get started?

Well, first of all you need an editor. An editor is what you type your tags(html, javascript) into. Second of all, you need web space. Web space is what you need so people can view your web site. I use Geocities, but there are many others you can use for free. There are also services you can use with no ads, but you do have to pay, and you usually get a free domain name. I recommend you look around and decide on what is best for your needs. Another thing you need are graphics. Graphics are what attract people to your web page. You would not like to visit a site that is boring with no color and writing all over. Graphics really spiff up your web site. One final thing you need are ideas. If you do not have an idea for what you want your web site to be about, think about what kind of web site YOU would enjoy visiting. Make your web site from there. Think about sports, music, an online magazine, or something else you enjoy. The one main thing is BE ORIGINAL! Also remember, do not copy.

How do I get a domain name? To get your own domain name, you have to pay for it. A domain name is something like www.yankees.com(official home of the New York Yankees). They usually cost 8-12 dollars a month. You can pick your domain name ending. Some common choices are .com(commercial sites), .edu(university web sites), or .org(non profit organization sites.) There are many more endings that have recently been instutionalized by the government. Go to my etc. section of this web site to find information on where to get domain names, web space, free graphics, email, and much more!

How do I make my own graphics? I made this web site from Jasc Paint Shop Pro and Jasc Animation Shop. You can go to www.jasc.com to download the evaluation version, which lasts 30 days, or you can buy them. They are both very convenient and easy to use. If you do not like these graphics programs, you can search the web for more, but decide carefully what is best for you!

How do I find web space/domain names/web hosts? To find them, just go to my etc. part of this site. You will find many different providers, with short summaries of each and what I recommend to beginners and the more advanced people. For free, you can use a host such asGeocities. There are many other hosts which charge money

How do I get my web site listed in search engines? To get your web site listed in search engines, you need meta tags. This is an example of my meta tags: Keep your keywords short and make it single worded. Keep your description in one or two complete sentences. These tags go between or and your tags. After you put the meta tags on your website, you need to start submitting your website to search engines. Some websites even charge you for packages, in which they submit your website to thousands of search engines, with the pricing depending on the package.
