Transitions™ Lifestyle

Led by Dr. Shari Lieberman, Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition and Exercise Physiology, the Transitions™ Lifestyle System presents a fresh approach to healthy living and weight management. The program is based on how our bodies react, absorb, and break down specific foods in the body. Dr. Lieberman explains how the Glycemic Index (GI) can positively or negatively impact our ability to lose or gain weight and provides healthy ways to eat as well as helpful hints to stay on track.

What is the Glycemic Index?

The Glycemic Index (GI) is simply a measurement of the impact of a carbohydrate on your blood sugar levels. For example, if you eat white bread, it has a very high glycemic index (nearly 100 on a scale of 1-100 with 100 being the highest) and it raises blood sugar very quickly. When blood sugar rises fast, your insulin levels also rise fast throwing a metabolic switch that tells your body to store fat.

Low GI foods, especially those high in fiber like beans or lentils, do not raise blood sugar quickly and therefore help to maintain your blood sugar at more moderate levels where your body burns calories more efficiently and maintains optimal insulin levels.

Incorporating low GI foods allows you to eat many different types of fruits, vegetables, grains and protein, which makes it so easy to follow and incorporate into your lifestyle. In fact, you're probably already eating many of these types of foods right now. Because this is a healthy way of eating, this becomes a natural way to take control of your own health and manage your weight.
