REMEMBERING OUR STARS
I had the urge to
return
To drive down that
road to the desert…
I guess I wanted to
go back
To the vast blue
skies,
The black velvet
nights and our stars.
So here I sit
remembering days so hot
We’d sleep under make
shift shade
Only venturing out
when the moon did.
I miss reclining
On the hood of your
car
Still warm from the
sun.
We’d lay together
Staring into the
black at our stars.
We would each pick
one out
Telling it’s story or
naming it
After some fairytale
character.
Then we’d make silly
wishes
On all the stars we
could count
Before falling
asleep.
But, while I’m
sitting here again,
You’ve kept moving on
Down that desert road
And 2000 miles gone.
There are no more
black velvet nights
Or stories about
stars
Because, for all my
remembering,
We can’t go back
Anymore than our
stars can stand still.
I think I should
leave now
Turn and go back down
the road
That brought me here
Leave this desert
behind
With it’s blue skies
and black nights.
Because with the sun
setting
I know that seeing
our stars
Without you here
Will only make me
hurt again
And it’s a hurt I
don’t need anymore.
Because as the moon
ventures out
I know that without
you
The stars that follow
Will only make my
heart hurt
And that’s a hurt I
don’t want anymore.
