Scarlett went over to Jamie’s house every day and helped Helen. Helen was a nice person and Scarlett loved to talk to her. Through Helen, Scarlett learned that she had a cousin named Colum. Colum was a priest living in Ireland who was helping to GET Ireland out of British hands. It was obvious that Colum was everyone’s favorite cousin because everyone talked about him all the time. Martha and Mary came over often enough to let Scarlett know this.
When Scarlett saw Rhett, she wasn’t prepared. She was wearing her worst dress (most worn out, Scarlett was trying to fit in). And was outside in Jamie’s garden trying to help Helen by getting a carrot for her. It was hot outside and she was sweating. Rhett saw her while riding in his carriage; he had come from Jamie’s store. Jamie was talking to his brother about how wonderful Scarlett was helping Helen and all. And Rhett asked about her. Jamie told him that Scarlett was at his house helping Helen. So Rhett decided to go and say hello.
When Rhett arrived Scarlett had just gotten the carrot out of the ground. Helen was watching her with amusement through the kitchen window thinking to herself “It’s sweet for Scarlett to try to help with the garden”
Then Rhett pulled up in his nice outfit.
“Scarlett, don’t tell me you are a servant. Haven’t I given you enough money?” Rhett said grinning.
“Hello, Rhett. I’m no servant. I’m just helping a friend.”
“Yes, I’ve heard about it from your cousin.”
“You have?” The sun was beating down on Scarlett. She knew that if she didn’t go inside soon that she was going to faint. Too late. Scarlett fainted. Rhett quickly got off his horse and picked her up. Helen ran out from the kitchen.
“Is she alright?” Helen said
“ I don't know. I think she needs a doctor”
“Take her home. It’s right around the corner. That pink house over there.”
“Okay.” Rhett took Scarlett home, and then he sent for the doctor. As it turned out Scarlett was actually sick. The heat just worsened it. Scarlett was told to stay in bed at all times. Rhett, being her husband was the only one allowed in the room. Rhett was seriously worried for Scarlett. He knew that she was never sick, and this worried him. Scarlett had never regained consciousness, and this made Rhett very worried. Rhett sat by her bed day in and day out, and everyday he worried more and more. Once Scarlett had been out of consciousness for three days Rhett began to give up hope.
