The CH-113 Labrador is a twin engine, twin rotor (three-bladed) helicopter designed for the Canadian Forces' search and rescue role. It has the following features: a 750 imperial gallon fuel capacity for relatively long-range search and rescue operations; a 5,000 kg cargo hook for external loads; a back ramp for easy loading; a watertight hull for water landings; a rescue hoist; and special equipment for the rescue and care of survivors (rescue belt, Billy Pugh net and STOKES litters). The fleet was updated under the Search and Rescue Capability Upgrade Project (SARCUP) which began in 1979. Improvements included high-powered searchlights and an upgraded electronics suite.
