The ZERO system is a program which functions on the same frequency as a pilot's brainwaves. Using that frequency, it automatically relays information regarding the fight directly to the pilot's brain. This includes the conscious mind AND the subconscious mind. Thus, it helps to focus the pilot's whole mind on one thing: destroy the enemy. [ The Why ] The ZERO system was developed accidentally by the original 5 scientists involved with Operation Meteor. When they realized what kind of effects a system like this would have on soldiers, they hid the information from Dekim and the likes. They DID find a purpose for the system, though. It was to accompany the designs for the mobile suit all 5 took part in creating. Named after the system, Wing ZERO, meant to be the most powerul mobile suit of its kind ever, would become even more powerful with such a built-in system. There is a lot of power to be had when a system helps both mobile suit and pilot fight as one unit. [ The Who ] Many people use the system through the second half of the series. The list, in order, is as follows:
[ The Where ] The ZERO system is found permanently in Wing ZERO and Epyon. The system is temporarily placed inside of Sandrock to aid Quatre in his strategic planning. It was soon taken out because Quatre no longer needed it to be successful. Some people think that the Altron Gundam had ZERO installed in it because Wufei went evil-crazy after his colony was destroyed. That's not true though. Wu-chan just got really really mad because he's Wu-chan. ^^ [ The When ] The ZERO system was introduced in the 24th episode, "The Gundam They Called ZERO". I sitll haven't figured out what it is in original translations. If someone can tell me, that'd be REALLY nice... u.u [ The How ] If that system were around today, I have a pretty good idea of how it would work on a human being. If you have the mental capacity to simulate such things (like me ^^), you would feel the system sending information to the front and forward-upper sides of your brain. That's the area a person uses to focus. As the pilot, your mind automatically reads ZERO's data without the use of your other senses. It be as if you didn't even need to look at the screen to know what was going on (that's what gives the speed advantage). You'd know exactly when and where your opponent was in the fight. However, you HAVE to know exactly WHO your enemy is for it to have a positive effect, otherwise you wouldn't be able to focus ZERO's information properly. The ZERO forces you to focus on one thing only: your enemy. If the information is not focused, you'd just go around destroying everything in your path: colonies, MDs, whatever. Quatre went insane because he allowed himself to be blinded with rage and confuse the real enemy, OZ, with the gullible (but still innocent) colonies. Because of the overload of information, the brain needs to force out any unnecessary information, thoughts, and especially emotions. These "weaknessess (emotions)" are expelled from the pilot's brain in the form of a hallucination. The pilots finally "see" their main weaknessess (fear/anger/worry/doubt, etc.) and gain a painfully clear acknowledgement of them. When this happens, the system buries the weakness from the pilot, making him feel more secure and stronger without it. Thus, the pilot can finally focus his whole mind on the task at hand. If you are able to overcome the surge of instant information received by your brain, you could easily defeat every enemy in your path. The ZERO's main ability is that it can harness and lead your line of thinking through combat to ensure that you will reach your goal: defeat the enemy. To quote Treize-sama, "There is nothing more noble and beautiful than a warrior without distractions." ^__^ That's why Treize installs the ZERO system in Epyon for Heero. The downside to ZERO's influence in combat is the very same reason why it's so effective. ZERO completely controls your mind, thus you are at its mercy. Once the enemy has been wiped out, the ZERO will not loosen its grasp on your mind and you'll just keep destroying things. That's another thing about this system. Once the real enemy is down, it seems to automatically choose a new target for you. [ The Hallucinations ] Each main pilot gets his turn with the ZERO system. As such, each pilot has a different reaction to ZERO's stimuli. They are listed in detail according to the pilot:
