| First Test Chittagong 28 February - 03 March 2006 Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first.� Sri Lanka made an immediate breakthrough, catching Javed Omar (4) in the first over.� However, Bangladesh then rebuilt their innings and took the total to 76 before Sri Lanka inflicted a double blow just before lunch with Nafees Iqbal (34) and Habibul Bashar (29) falling in the space of five runs.� At lunch, Sri Lanka held the advantage with the score 3 for 84.� Bangladesh recovered through the afternoon session, adding a further 107 runs for the loss of only Shahriar Nafees (27) to be more evenly placed at 4 for 191 at tea.� Sri Lanka fought back strongly during the evening session.� While Mohammad Ashraful posted his 3rd test century, Sri Lanka dismissed Khaled Mashud (6), Alok Kapali (16), Mohammad Rafique (17), Mohammad Ashraful (136) and Syed Rasel (1) to have Bangladesh p for 315 at stumps. Sri Lanka quickly dismissed Shahadat Hossain (13) on the second morning to have Bangladesh all out for 319 runs.� Malinga was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 57 off 16.5 overs.� Sri Lanka began their reply and lost Vandort (0) in the first over.� After a period of consolidation, Sri Lanka then lost Tharanga (42) shortly before going to lunch at 2 for 96.� Bangladesh continued to apply the pressure during the afternoon session, however, despite dismissing Jayawardene (30), Sangakkara (69) and Dilshan (22), Sri Lanka added 103 runs in the session to be 5 for 199, only 120 runs in arrears.� Sri Lanka continued to eat into the deficit during the afternoon session.� Bangladesh only managed to dismiss Maharoof (72) late in the session before Sri Lanka ended the day at 6 for 313, only six runs in arrears. Bangladesh needed to quickly wind up the Sri Lankan innings to avoid a sizable deficit on the third morning.� They succeeded after catching Samaraweera (58), Fernando (6) and Muralitharan (5) and then running out Malinga (0) while Sri Lanka added only 25 runs to their overnight total to be all out for 338 runs. Shahadat Hossain was the best of the bowlers with 4 for 83 off 22 overs.� Bangladesh then began their second innings and erased the 19 run deficit without loss before going to lunch at no wicket for 28. Bangladesh took the total to 56 before a mini collapse saw Javed Omar (31) and Habibul Bashar (12) both trapped in front and Mohammad Ashraful (1) caught in the space of 13 runs to be 4 for 69. Bangladesh then batted through to be 4 for 104 at tea. The evening session was a disaster for Bangladesh as Muralitharan spun them out of the game. After taking the score to 4 for 122, Bangladesh lost Khaled Mashud (15), Shahriar Nafees (38), Alok Kapali (9), Shahadat Hossain (0), Enamul Haque (1) and Mohammad Rafique (40) for just 59 runs to be all out for 181 runs. Muralitharan was the pick of the bowlers with 6 for 54 off 19.5 overs. Left with a victory target of only 163 runs, Sri Lanka ended the day at no wicket for 0 for 25 off 7.3 overs. On the fourth morning, Bangladesh managed to catch Tharanga (19) with the sixth ball of the day. However, Sri Lanka moved inexorably toward the victory target. Despite Sangakkara (46) being caught at 2 for 115, Sri Lanka reached the target before the scheduled lunch break to claim an eight-wicket victory. Second Test Bogra 08 - 11 March 2006 Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first.� Bangladesh made a steady start and passed 50 before Nafees Iqbal (26) was trapped in front at 1 for 52.� Bangladesh later lost Javed Omar (35), who was also trapped in front, shortly before going to lunch at 2 for 94 with the game evenly poised.� Sri Lanka caught Shahriar Nafees (9) soon after play resumed before Bangladesh regrouped and passed 150.� However, in the hour leading up to tea, Sri Lanka dismissed Mohammad Ashraful (24), Mushfiqur Rahim (2) and Habibul Bashar (69) in the space of 29 runs.� By tea, Sri Lanka held the advantage with Bangladesh 6 for 188.� Bangladesh lost their final four wickets for only 26 runs after tea as Sri Lanka dismissed Khaled Mashud (12), Mohammad Rafique (32), Shahadat Hossain (6) and Syed Rasel (0) to have Bangladesh all out for 234 runs.� Muralitharan was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 79 off 30.5 overs, his 50th five-wicket haul in Tests.� Sri Lanka faced eleven overs before ending the day at 2 for 25, having lost Vandort (0) and Bandara (2). Bangladesh maintained the pressure on the second morning, dismissing Samaraweera (20) and Sangakkara (0) to have Sri Lanka 4 for 43.� However, Sri Lanka then began rebuilding their innings and batted through to lunch to be 4 for 121.� Bangladesh struggled to hold Sri Lanka during the afternoon session as the tourists added 102 runs in the session for the loss of only Jayawardene (105) after he had posted his 14th Test century.� At tea, Thargara had posted his maiden Test century and Sri Lanka was 5 for 223, only twelve runs in arrears.� Bangladesh had better success after tea, bowling Dilshan (33), catching Maharoof (7) and trapping Fernando (5) in the space of 31 runs.� However, by stumps, Sri Lanka was 8 for 302, with a lead of 68 runs. Bangladesh made short work of dismissing Malinga (12) and Tharanga (165) on the third morning to have Sri Lanka all out for 316 runs.� Shahadat Hossain was the best of the bowlers with 5 for 86 off 21.3 overs, his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests.� However, Sri Lanka then made short work of the Bangladeshi top order, catching Nafees Iqbal (2), Javed Omar (13) and Shahriar Nafees (6) to have Sri Lanka 3 for 46.� By lunch, Bangladesh was 3 for 71, still eleven runs in arrears.� Sri Lanka turned the screws after lunch, dismissing Mohammad Ashraful (13), Mushfiqur Rahim (0), Khaled Mashud (6) and Habibul Bashar (73) to have Bangladesh 7 for 162 at tea, with a lead of only 80 runs.� Sri Lanka wrapped up the tail after tea, dismissing Shahadat Hossain (8), Enamul Haque (3) and Mohammad Rafique (64) in the space of 14 runs to have Bangladesh all out for 201 runs.� Malinga (3 for 51 off 14.1 overs) and Fernando (3 for 51 off 19 overs) shared the bowling honours, however, Muralitharan overshadowed their performances in taking his 600th wicket and becoming the only bowler to take 50 wickets against every Test playing nation.� Sri Lanka was left with the task of making 120 runs for victory and batted through the 20 overs before stumps without loss to be no wicket for 77 at the end of the day. Rain delayed play on the fourth day. When play eventually got underway, Sri Lanka cruised to victory, adding the 43 runs required without loss and finished with Vandort (40*) and Tharanga (71*) the not out batsmen to claim victory by ten wickets. |
